Setting up Sager 8890 wireless usb module

I had to format and reinstall windows, now I cant get the WLAN working. The laptop is running Windows XP Pro with service pack 1. I ran the setup CD for the wireless lan that came with the laptop, but it still doesnt work.

There is no wireless card listed in the Device Manager, but there is an "unknown USB device." I dont know if that is the wireless module, but I tried updating the drivers of the unknown USB device to the wireless drivers. It would not allow that.

The wireless lan utility that was installed does nothing when I try to run it. I can see it in the process viewer, but that is it. I saw somebody else had a similiar problem in a previous post but no solution.

I would like to install a newer driver if available, but I have no idea where to get a newer driver. No where is the brand name indicated. The CD just says something like Wireless LAN Driver. The PDF manual just says IEEE 802.11b wireless USB MOdule.

Anyone have ideas please? I cant start downloading and reinstalling other needed stuff until I have the wireless working.

suggestion - in the device manager remove the unknown USB device (select remove from the Action menu drop down). Then reinstall the driver.

if that doesn't work I can power up my second 8890 which has the wireless module in it and do some more testing for you.

No wireless yet

Thank you for the suggestion. I just now tried it. It doesnt work

I removed the device and tried reinstalling the drivers from the CD. During the installation, the bubble appears in the lower right hand corner and says it found a new device and proceeds to install a unknown usb device again.

I think my wireless card may be a WNC, if that is a brand name. So far I have had no luck finding drivers under that name.

It works now

I got it working finally. It started working after I unchecked the box "let windows handle my wireless stuff." Instead the program that came with the wireless card handles it. Not the way I like to do it, but it does work. Thanks again for your reply
