just curious, this thread's been a round for awhile, how many other people have successfully upgraded their ferrari 3200 to turion mt40? And can they post actual 3dmark scores? I'm thinking of upgrading but I want to see how much difference in performance there is.

I was looking for more information about CPU upgrade and I found these people almost by accident. eSupport They claim to be experts with BIOS, so we'll see if they can deliver what they promise.

I send them a request of a new BIOS supporting Turion processors. I'll let you guys know what they answer as soon as I hear from them. I admit that the situation doesn't look that promising, but it's not like we have anything to lose by asking. But if many Ferrari 3x00 owners contacted them... who knows what might happen?

try 3dmark01, that is very cpu dependant

Thread Starter
Wow. I haven't been around in a while. Anyhow I changed my album, so I updated the links in this thread.

The laptop is still running fine. I have two hard drives so i'm swapping between Vista Beta2 (stock 80GB HDD)and WindowsXP (my main 7200RPM HDD)

I still haven't added more ram to it, so it's on 512 right now. It's plenty fast for what I do.

on a sidenote: My friend had 3200 and I tried to upgrade him to a MT40 as well, no go. I don't have my ML-34 anymore, so I didn't get a chance to see if a slower processor works or not. It just froze on the Ferrari splash screen. I'm guessing that Acer used different revs on their mobos.

do you know if the ML-34 is the best processor upgrade that has been confirmed to work in the 3200?

Is this a better option than the AMD Mobile Athlon 64 4000+ (62W) Newark?

the option you mentioned is very heat for this laptop, that have a low power processor (35W) that can work at cooler temperature and save more batt power

Can anyone that are doing a upgrade do a full guide throw the operation? So we can use that guide and upgrade it by our self.
A step by step right throw the operation with pics and so.

Just tried a Turion ML-44 and a Turion MT-37 with my 3200 Ferrari.
Bad luck with both of them...
With both I’ve get stuck at Ferrari logo boot sequence...

Could it be because of the memory: PC2700 (normally shall not be the case, but...)?

Anyway, I just tested the two processors and I couldn't keep them until I could find PC3200 memory.

I have just successfully installed a Turion MT-37 in my Ferrari 3200. It was pretty straightforward:

1. Upgrade the BIOS to 3A27
2. Disassemble laptop, install CPU

Here i encountered my only problem: the system would not boot, and the laptop beeped 4 times on startup without turning on the LCD. After trying to take out various components, i figured it was the RAM. I took the chips out and put them back in, and the system booted without any problems at all. Might've been the dust inside the laptop... BTW, it was the original memory that came with the laptop

One thing you should note is the fact that my laptop is made in April 2004 - so it might not have the lock some people mentioned that prevented the installation of a Turion CPU.

The BIOS recognized the MT-37 as a "Mobile AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3700+ EE"

Now my system is a lot cooler - 36 degrees centigrade at idle, tops out at 65 degrees; with the old 2800+ it was about 20 degrees hotter on average. I haven't measured the battery life yet, but I expect it to be at least 15% longer. The system feels a lot more responsive too.

For any proof screenshots/questions/more detailed instructions, just ask

kdavyd: Great stuff, does it work properly with PowerNow! too? I'd like some proof screenshots please, of CPU-Z, RMClock, etc.

Yes, PowerNow works great, although I prefer to use CrystalCPUID for more control over the entire process. At idle, the CPU runs at 800Mhz, 0.9V with an operating temperature of 36 degrees celsius; at 2Ghz under full load, I get about 65 degrees. Battery life on 800Mhz is 3 hours and 20 minutes with a brand-new stock battery (got it for free because I have extended warranty), only using CrystalCPUID; the video card runs at the default frequency. I'm pretty sure it's possible to squeeze out 3:40 or maybe even 4 hours with aggressive tweaking.

Thanks for the pics, I'm convinced. Sweet!

I see that you use BIOS version 3A27, but are you aware that there is a newer one out - version 3A32? You can get it here:
ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/notebook/ferrari_3200/bios

There is even a newer BIOS available for the F3400 (yes, it's perfectly compatible with the F3200, no worries) here (version 3C25):
ftp://ftp.work.acer-euro.com/noteboo...400/vista/Bios

Have you tried upgrading the BIOS? Thank you!

Hopefully kdavyd can repost these pics..I am curious about his results...

I'm quite surprised that this thread is still going on. Hm.. maybe I should go to the storage room, pick up my old F3200 and blow away all the dust it has acquired in the past months. Heck, maybe I should even try this upgrade just for the fun of it! By the way, if MT-37 works I don't see any reason why MT-4x shouldn't work as well...

Bios 3A27 works fine. It just recognizes the CPU as a 4000+EE.

Stay tuned...benchmarks to come shortly

Hi, I'm from SPAIN. Recently I purchased a MT37 Turion 64 mobile CPU in order to Upgrade the Mobile Athlon 64 2800+ CPU but when installing the NEW CPU the System shows Ferrari LOGO and I can read that CPU Installed is a MOBILE ATHLON 64 3700+ EE but system hungs up.

I tried to upgrade BIOS to 3a27 and 3a32. Previous versions nothing can't be seen on screen. Just a black screen.

I've got 2GB DDR333 PC2700 RAM Memory. You only have 512MB RAM with your TURION MT40. Perhaps the CPU Works with less amount of memory from MICRON, NANYA of INFINEON memory manufacturers. So, I purchased a MICRON 256MB memory (which comes with the Ferrari laptop from manufacturer) to test if the TURION MT37 works fine.

What do you think?

Regards, and thanks for taking your time by reading my post.

Hi:

As shown on pictures, you've got 512MB RAM with your TURION MT40 but... What happen if you add more memory to your laptop?
I'm in exactly the same situation right now, but with a slight twist:

Ferrari 3200, installed Turion MT-37, shows up as 3700+ EE with bios version 3A27 but I can only get it to boot with 256 MB modules (tried Nanya and Samsung). With my Kingston 2x512 MB it hangs after bios screen, haven't tried 1 GB modules yet though. Bios 3A32 same result and with 3C25 (for F3400 but works with F3200) I get all black screen, no boot with Turion. All bios versions and memory configs works with my trusty 'ol Mobile 2800+ though...

Any ideas? Can someone confirm if it's the 512 MB modules that's causing the trouble then I will surely purchase one or two 1 GB ones just to keep my shining red Ferrari up to speed for just a while longer
post #60 of 67
Small news: My F3200 works with 256+512 MB memory installed but not with 512+512 MB. Have ordered a 1 GB PC3200 module now and have big hopes for this to work as this hopefully will improve memory performance somewhat too.
