START>ALL PROGRAMS>IPOD>IPOD UPDATER (DATE)>RESTORE

did you try that jtom?

also when i plug in mine, it takes a good 30secs sometimes for it to be seen in windows.

preferably you should be using USB 2.0

that, or the straight old reset trick, push the hold switch back and forth and then hold down the menu and center buttons for about 10 seconds.

Incidentally, when it says do not disconnect, its never hurt mine to disconnect it (have to do it sometimes, for some reason my laptop wont clear post with my ipod plugged in)

since the ipods are considered external HD's too, it will always say Do Not Disconnect because it's acting as the extra drive until you tell it otherwise.

to have it say OK, simply open My Computer (or iTunes) find the ipod drive and hit EJECT...and you'll notice it'll say OK after that.

that's it.

I am having the same problem. I bought the ipod today and I connected it and itunes didnt detect it. I unplugged it but now the ipod has frozen and I cant do anything with it. I really dont feel like waiting 14 hours for the ipod video to shut off so I can restart it. Any suggestions? (thankfully I got the replacement warranty at Bestbuy so I can get another one)

In addition, one of the four main buttons doesnt make any noise when you press it. The other three make a clicking sound when you press them.

slip the hold button on, then off, and then hold down the center button and the menu button together until it resets.

And if the video IPODS are anything like my mini and nano they do not come ready for windows and you must first format the drive. Hope this helps.

really? my nano came formatted as fat32 so it would work on either.

My mini (bought this time last year) worked fine at first, but after the last few software updates its been acting weird....

Itunes pops up, I get the "Do no disconnect" message on the mini, and itunes says it's updating the ipod to my library.... but it's SO slow.... usually it will take about 30 secs, and then say it's done, but then when I check my iPod mini I find that only about 5 songs have been added, instead of, let's say, 30. So every time you disconnect and reconnect it, it just crawls along, getting only a few songs each time... when I first bought it it updated fast and easy.

BTW I am using a USB 2.0 card for my laptop (only has 1.1 ports). Maybe I should try plugging directly into the 1.1 slot, it could probably be faster?

that may be part of the problem. in windows in general i have problems w/ peripherals being recognized appropriately, particularly external storage devices. i end up thinking something's wrong w/ the device and then i plug it into my mac and it works as it should. :\ i end up believing it's just a matter of time for the registry to get all gunked up so externals don't get recognized as they should.

also, what kind of tracks r u trying to import? music? podcasts? i tend to find that when i plug in my nano that itunes launches and updates the podcasts as well as the ipod. however, the podcasts aren't always updated on my ipod (bc it's downloading the newest one while the current podcasts are being moved to the ipod). so basically, i just launch itunes first, let the podcasts update, and then plug in the ipod so all the new stuff gets moved over.
