They must have just released it because I yanked the drive and it is for sure a SATA connector.

EDIT: Here are some pics showing the new HDD.

For all of us who were able to get in on this deal... I have a somewhat important question.

Those who got the Silver Protection Package not only got 12% off but it said 100$ mail-in rebate also. Those who got the Gold Protection Package were to get a 150$ mail-in rebate. And those that got the Platinum Protection Package were to get a 200$ mail-in rebate. That means we all got our systems for even LESS!!!!

Well I got the Silver package myself. But the important question. Where the hell is our rebate form? And why is the rebate not reflected on our packing slip or our order receipt? It still says it on the EPP page that choosing these packages entitles you to these rebates. BUT, gives no links as to where you redeem them online nor does it provide a letter/form to fill-out and mail back to Dell. I want that mail-in rebate, which brings my system cost down to 1030$. =)

If anyone finds where/how we get this rebate, please PM me when you post so I will see it. I'll be calling Dell tomorrow also... see if I can complain about it and get them to give me a Dell Gift Card like the XPS buyers get! =)

Check to see but there should be a SATA adapter on that hard drive. Just pull it off. When i replaced the 80GB 5400rpm drive in my XPS 2 it had one on it and i had to pull it off and stick it on my 100 gig 7200rpm Hitachi drive i bought.

Yea i noticed that as well. I dont know where the rebate forms are at. I didn't really look into it much though cause i got mine for a great price so i wasn't about to complain although i'd love to save another $100 or more if there is a rebate somewhere.

I believe you had to select the more expensive 3 year option to be eligible for the rebate. It was selected by default, so if you deselected it (I think it lowered the price about $200) I don't think your eligible. But thats alot of "I think's"
For EPP purchaces, there's one form for all eligible rebates (listed on your packing slip) at 'Mail-in Rebate Center' under the 'Service and Support' tab.

Ya it was like $194 more with a $100 rebate, so without the rebate you are still paying $94 less.

Hello all,

I purchased several laptops through this deal and deliberately skimped out on the memory because 2 gigs for 400 bucks is ridiculous. If I add memory from another source myself, will it void the warranty? If so, will having a Dell service person install it for you make a difference?

I'm sure it has been answered but the search function is unresponsive as of now.

I have read how some people bought 7800s through Dell and installed it themselves which Dell permitted. The difference here would be that the memory came from elsewhere and that a Dell service person would install it.

Thank you all.

JungWon, buying memory from NewEgg and putting it in the laptop yourself will NOT void your warranty. But if the new memory fries... it will not be covered by Dell warranty obviously. Memory, Harddrives, and wireless cards can be added by the user without voiding your Dell warranty.

You can certainly replace your RAM. However if you ever need to send the notebook back to DELL for service or replacement I suspect you may want to have the origainl RAM to swap back in (or its equivalent).

Hello all,

I received the 9300 ordered from this deal earlier today. The laptop is wider than I am. I carried it around the house to get a feel for things. I walked through a doorway and bashed the DVD drive against the corner of the wall. The wall crumbled. That was the first hit the Dell took. The 9300 is a solid machine but I’m going to add 3 years of accidental coverage anyways.

Programs would mysteriously open and close before I realized that the finger pad is tapping sensitive.

Thanks JaxChris and anettis for responding. I’ll ask a Dell Rep when upgrading the warranty about adding memory myself. JaxChris made it sound like it was perfectly acceptable but anettis made it sound like it was OK as long as you're sneaky about it.

Those who are awaiting their machines, I can say that you'll have some unique experiences with it.

Goodnight all.

Sincerely, JungWon

Hi. I did not mean to imply that you need to be sneaky about it. It is just if you ever need to physically return the notebook you may not want to send it back with any upgrades (since you may not get the same notebook back) and on the other hand if you send them back a notebook without RAM they could think you are trying to pull a fast one on them and hence charge you for replacement RAM. Of course you may be able to tell them ahead of time that you did an upgrade and you perfer that they send you back a computer with no RAM.

If you feel you may smash the notebook against the wall on a regular basis I would definitely consider the Complete Care Warranty.

Enjoy your new machine!

HI. To answer the question about warranty thingy. i have a dell desktop and have the gold warranty and i can tell you that dell does not care what you upgrade. I have in home service and nothing in my machine is original except the motherboard/CPU. the only issue you will have is dell wont warranty the non-dell parts but they will help you troubleshoot it.

dell is very good with their warranties. Also remember that their warranty is handled by third parties who most likely wont care (the people i dealt with didn't, in fact they offered to exchange one of my harddrive (that wasn't dell with one that is but i declined because they will only exchange with what you ordered and not with the equivalent).

No luck. There appears to be no SATA Adapter on it. I looked up the drive model and Hitachi has it listed as a SATA drive, not PATA.

Just received my 9300 today through this insane deal, thanks again Waynet and Buddha!!

As for my HD, it is a Toshiba 60gb SATA drive, says it on the HD itself and there appears to be no removable connector. I'm not sure there is just a "SATA-PATA" adapter like some have mentioned, I cannot pull off this alleged connector that is on the HD and I didn't want to force it in case there is none? Looks like I may have to sell my 100gig PATA drive

Tons of people, myself included, are using the Hitachi 7200 100MB drives, purchased separately, with our XPS/9300. I suspect you are overlooking the adapater. When I upgraded at first glance I did not notice it either as it appears to be part of the drive unit but it will pull off - at least that is how mine worked.
Anettis any particular way to pull it off? I tried for awhile and nothing would budge
post #279 of 426
It has been a whlie but I think I just tugged on the piece of plastic that had all the connector pins on it. Mine came off to reveal another row of pin connectors. The adapter needed to come off anyway so that I could use my old drive in an enclosure. I am not well versed in various HD interfaces, but this is how it worked for me.

The newer drives may be native SATA drives instead of IDE drives with a SATA adapter. My XPS 2 i got in August came with an 80GB Samsung IDE drive with the SATA adapter on it since the XPS 2 takes a SATA drive. You may be able to call Dell spare parts and order that little SATA adapter to use.
