I can clearly see that you don't have one and never tested. To me, it's empirical. I can leave my notebook an entire day with the cooler on and the notebook fan will never ever start. Well, if I turn it off, I bet whatever you want that the notebook fan will start in no more than 10 or 15 minutes for something like 20 seconds. I've done this test countless times... well, for the past year and half...
Also, if I take it from the bottom of the notebook, the notebook itself will become hotter than what is is without the cooler. Just to finish, I did a test with Mobile Meter when I received my notebook last year and I remember that my HD temperature was substancially lower (had probs reading processor temp)... I could check my review here somewhere, as I believe I wrote that at the time I did this test...
However, I realize that some systems may have much more benefit by having coolers than others, I assure you. Maybe that is why you have this idea.
