5720 CPU Temps under load - Page 3

Go my call back from Sager. Technician wasn't sure if mine was affected or not, but said "Go ahead and check it out". I also made sure that my warranty was not going to be affected. So, I will be "unscrewing the belly to check the jelly".

All of a sudden, I can't read the CPU temperature anymore. Only the HD. Any reason why?
pinibo..
i had same.
did you open the back cover and replace heat sink?

if so, do it again with care.
when you screw them try not to hard and follow the number.
i think that part is sensitive.

after that it will work..

Have not opened it up yet. Will do that in the am. CPU temp just disappeared. Uninstalled programs and reinstalled, still no CPU temp, just HD.
Well, I opened it up and what I saw is not good. 1) There seems to be a plastic film covering the top of the entire CPU. 2) There is hardly any compound on CPU or Heathsink. 3) That black film strip, shown by Hakigo, is present on the Heathsink. I called Sager back to see what should be done before I proceed and waiting for their call back.

Ok listen up lol wow...amazing lol

Anyone if you do have high temps and that black pad is on your heatsink take it off put on some as5 and ur done. A thin layer of as5 (about the thickness of a sheet of paper) spread only enough to cover the DIE of the CPU (the little metal rectangle on top of the cpu) put the heatsink back on and your temps should drop enough. THIS WILL NOT VOID YOUR WARRENTY.

That black plastic sheet kinda thing..film strip..w/e u want to call it is supposed to be removed when installing the heatsink so the thermal paste underneath it can make contact with the cpu directly. The thermal paste under it probably isn't that great. So just clean it off throw on some AS5 and put the heatsink back on..WITHOUT the black film strip. temps should drop pretty quick

also i think i read somewhere that the same heatsink covers the cpu and the gpu? ...the same stuff can be applied to the gpu to help it cool down better

The black is the thermal pad... It's only if there's a plastic sheet on top of that black pad (see the photo I posted from Sager) that Sager's even considering servicing it. So replacing the black thermal pad without 'permission' _will_ void warranty.
Sager called back. I must say that I have had quick responses from Ty at Sager. It was explained that the black thermal pad must remain. fozzylyon is correct in his statement. I did not have a plastic sheet on top of the thermal pad. I have a plastic film that is covering the entire CPU. Ty will be e-mailing instructions to remove that plastic film. The compound is supposed to be under said plastic film.

i dont really understand what pinibo said.

so removing black film will void entire warranty?
even if i have a problem with keyboard, cannot be replaced by warranty?

can you take picture please?
is that plastic film fall off from heat sink and stick with your cpu now?
is that what you saying?

my cpu is shining when i look at it. is that it?
This plastic film did not come from the heat sink. The one I am talking about seem to cover the entire top of the CPU...including that little rise where the compound should be. It appears that the compound would be beneath the plastic film. As per Sager, the black strip must remain where it is on the heat sink. No possibility of pictures for now.

my cpu is shining when i look at it. is that it? Yes, that is it. Not only is mine shiny, but you can see where the plastic film is thight all around the middle ridge where the compound goes. You could take a sharp knife and make a slit in it, all around the ridge. Still waiting for Sager to send e-mail on how to remove this.
so i applied AS5 on top of plastic thing? that you tried remove.

i put back black film that supports to be with heat sink.
temp still same...31c-35c.
so black film doesnt effect heat.... i guess..
black color was erased a little bit cause AS5.

what about only appling AS5 on cpu will void warranty?

Wierd Observation

I have noticed that, right after turning on the laptop, that the temp is reported as ~32C. After a few minutes it then jumps immediatly/directly to 51C. There is no "ramp-up" to the high temp. Also, this is the temp while only surfing the net.

I am wondering if anyone else is having this happen?
any update?

Updating the BIOS did not help

I have a call into Sager support... waiting for them to call me. I did speak to PCTorque support today and they did think that it was strange but offered no solution other than to call Sager.
mobile meter will do that, on my sucky laptop i fire up cpu burn or a game and the temp shoots to 70 degrees from 55 idle in a second or so and it falls back just as quickly
post #56 of 63
OK guys...we all know that someone from Sager or PCTorque or Discount or Power or any of the other Sager resellers are aware of this thread. Please respond that this problem is being looked into or we may all start believing the DellHeads about them having the best support....
hey all, what programs are you using to monitor temp? I tried to find mobile meter but the page is in Japanese so I could not find the download...

feeling a little noobish right now

Mobile Meter is on a Japanese page. Go back to it, at the top you should see this:

This page is written in Japanese, but Mr.Tamaru translated this page into English.
You can download latest MobileMeter from here.

Just click on the "here" and it should start download.

Here's the link to the page: http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Oakland/8259/

Yeah, it's wonderful. Too bad I can't find a single skin for it. The yellow background totally does not go with my desktop theme
