I think I have a buggy videocard.

This weird thing happens whenever I try to run intensive 3D programs/games.

I have a 6800 Go Ultra on my XPS Gen2.

Up to now, everything worked ok, with the exception of random reboots whenever I played Counter Strike Source. These were rare and happened when my card reached 100 degrees celsius.

Last night when I tried to play CS:S, the game froze and I got the blue screen of death telling me that the video card or driver went into an infinite loop and some other stuff. So I reboot and I try again to run the game but this time, as ever since then, windows freezes and the only way to fix this is to reboot.

I reinstalled CS:S and I get the same thing.
I then tried different drivers. Right now I use the Dell ones. Same problem.

I downloaded 3DMark05 and this one freezes one second after the test starts.

I can watch movies, play older games (age of empires 2 conqueors) and even Homeworld 2. But no 3D intensive games work.

Could it be a problem with my video card?
I never overcloaked it nor screwed with the settings.

Right now average temperature is 51 degrees. When it worked, during games (CS:S),temp would go up to 95 or reboot once it reached 101 degrees.

Any suggestions on how I could fix this? Or just tell dell to come replace it?

Clean out your HS fins with compressed air. (take off the front panel + keyboard, and spray the fans while your at it.)

ask dell for a replacement.

I don't think that is the problem.
I just got the laptop about a month ago. It looks clean to me. There is not enough dust in there to clean.

Thanks. I will call dell.
I hate how low quality their hardware is. I mean for 4000$CAD I would expect something that would last at least 1 year until warranty expires. lol.
Good thing I have 3 yrs warranty.

Update: Now it died completely. When I try to boot the maching the screen stays black and even so machine stops somewhere before entering Windows. I will call Dell and see when they can come and fix this.

I heard Dell had crappy quality but I hoped I wouldn't be burned by it.

I appreciate that you must be pretty pissed, but if you thought and heard that Dell had bad quality stuff, why did you pay so much for the laptop? I hope you get it fixed asap btw

Wouldn't it seem that nVidia is more to blame for the faulty chipsets on the video card than Dell?

Wow... I just went through 5 representatives. Had to call the french ones to redirect me to the correct place. Two hours of waiting/forwarding.

The technician made me test the laptop. We came to the conclusion that it might be both the lcd and the video card. Replacement will come sometimes this week.
