any different firewire driver for ricoh?

Hi, as many of you know, the ricoh firewire controller, used in dell notebooks, is incompatible with most prolific firewire chipsets for harddrive enclosures. Unfortunately, I have an old prolific which cannot be flashed by the user to a newer firmware, and this would be the only feasible workaround. I could use the 128k patch but that just resulted in firewire transfers being very slow. I heard there's another driver I could use in place of the stock driver as installed by windows. I know this is only a workaround and I'd be very wary of plugging in my enclosure to another machine for fear of corrupting data, but since it's connected to my dell laptop 99.9% of the time, it's better than having to use usb.

I personally feel safer with the USB2 connection since the firewire connection isnt powered I have the fear or someone tripping over a wire and potentially killing my harddrive. As far as the driver thing

hmm my drive is externally powered though, not one of the 2.5" ones so i dont know how much a usb would save me. as far as usb too, i have way too many devices on usb and everything gets flaky when i transfer files down usb as well.
