Another thing to consider before doing an after-market hd upgrade is that IBM doesn't initially provide you w/ all the factory software, they dump it all on a hidden 6-7GB partition on the hd that comes stock w/ your lappy (including the OS; the only CD that came w/ mine was the Lotus suite.. nice and useless).
By hidden, I mean that their BIOS can access it and re-image your machine from it (basically like Norton Ghost, saves you a LOT of time and config. if your dirty your OS a lot and like to wipe things clean and start from scratch again), but that space isn't recognized when doing an install of XP Pro from your own CD (~53GB shows up as configurable on mine). I haven't tried, but I'm sure there's a way to get that partition out of there if you're determined. I just don't have time to dick w/ it since I'm using mine for work and can't afford the down-time right now.
I think arpia mentioned this earlier, but you can call IBM customer support (they're pretty quick; I didn't have to wait longer than a min. before a human voice picked up) and ask for the factory software on CD after you receive your laptop. When the rep. asked me why I needed it, I told him I'd like to redo the partitions on the hd (need to split their giant c: drive into a c: and a d: for my work environment), and that was that. He took down my info and my cd's are on their way (should be here this week sometime).
So anyways, yeah, the point is, if you intend to change up the hd later, a good idea would be to call IBM and ask for the factory software on CDs. Hell, it's a good idea even if you intend to -keep- your hd and just want to reclaim that space at some point down the road.
