Rebuilt my laptop - what Dell software is required?

So I rebuilt my new 630m over the holiday weekend (full review to come) with a 100GB Hitachi and I think I have everything installed the way I want it. I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything (for example, do I need to install anything for steedstep to work correctly).

I logged into my Dell account, punched in my service tag and was then provided with a list of downloads. Here is what I installed...

Dell Quickset (allows you to use the front buttons)
I passed on the MediaDirect, it takes just as long to start that as it does to come out of hibernation...

Audio driver
Chipset driver
Memory Card reader driver
Modem Driver
Touchpad driver
Wired and wireless network drivers
Video driver

There are other downloads available like Dell Utilities that I can safely skip (I think). The only one I'm not sure about is:

System Utilities: Dell Notebook System Software, Utility, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Multi Language, Multi System, v.3.11.0, A18

because in the description it says 'NSS is necessary for correct operation of your Dell portable computer'. I think it's just an update downloader and I usually do that on my own. Everything seems to be working great, I don't think I'm missing anything. Recomendations? BTW, I love the 630m!

Check device manager for any exclamation marks and failing that, your probably good to go.

Hey Strafe, have you used powerstrip to determine who the manufacturer of your screen is? I just received my Inspiron 630m and while the screen is very good, it pales in comparison to my 700m screen in viewing angles and clarity. It actually looks more like the Samsung Truelife Screen on the Inspiron XPS Gen 2 (i.e. slightly grainy look, very noticable light leakage, minus the better view angles of that screen and the 700m). I am reformatting mine now and will use power strip to see who makes this screen.

I have taken picture comparing screens and they will be up for you guys by tonight. Otherwise its a very nice system and not much heavier feeling than my 700m.

I ran powerstrip and it shows the monitor model as QDS0048. I'm not sure if thats what you were looking for. I haven't owned a laptop before so i dont have anything to compare it with but I'm very happy with the display. I got the truelife screen, it's very bright, very sharp, not grainy. I would say that the viewing angle is it's weakest point but I really haven't had any issues with that.

Now this is different.

The media buttons on my 6000 works without QuickSet - it actually needs MediaDirect to function. I only need QuickSet if I want to load DMX by pressing the Play button.

Hmmm, interesting. Well, I know the front panel didnt respond to anything until I installed Quickset (which also gives me overlays when adjusting brightn ess and volume). As I understand it, MediaDirect is a linux distribution that they put on a separate partition. Anyone know how this really works?

Probably because you haven't repaired MediaDirect.

Yeah, the QuickSet will also display indicators on screen. On the 6000, it is also required if pressing Fn+F10 to eject the CD drive is to work.

The media buttons on the 6000 can also control my Windows Media Player, PowerDVD 6 and RealPlayer, but only if they are loaded manually. As far as I can tell, on the 6000 the QuickSet functions with MediaDirect only to launch DMX.
