Those who have HL2 and 8104 please read!

Well, I'm seriously thinking to buy Half Life 2 through Steam for my Acer TM8104.

However, I've heard that HL2 has a stuttering problem with some desktops/notebooks. So I decided to download the demo first just to check it out. Unfortunately I was experiencing some serious stuttering when there was a change in sound (e.g. entering a room, etc) in the game.

To be honest I really don't know what to do. On the one hand, I want to play this awesome game very much but I'm not willing to pay $60 for a game that it's not even working properly.

My question is whether those of you who own HL2 had similar problems with the full game? I was thinking that maybe the demo is not properly patched and maybe the full game won't have the stuttering problem anymore... What do you think? I just don't want to waste $60... also it would be too risky to buy the game and just see what happens.

I would appreciate any input.

Thanks

PS: I've updated to the newest Realtek High Definition Audio drivers from Realtek's official website. Also, I tried the demo with the 5.10 omega drivers and 5.11 mobility catalyst drivers without any success.

the demo worked fine on my 8104.

i bought the game - but to my dismay found no cd-key in the box, so i've still never been able to play the full version. still looking for a patch ;-)

Use the search function dude. I've answered two topics on this, and pretty in-depth as well. Take a look.

Wow. My better one got deleted. Sorry.

Anyway, it runs fantastically. The best of any new game out there, especially if it's overclocked. Even with the highest resolution possible, and even with on the new Lost Coast demo that Valve just released. Have fun.

if the demo has stuttering is there any chance that the full game won't have any?

Possibly. Demos can be pre-release and pre-finished code, though HL2 has been out a long time. HL2 plays and looks great on my 8104, usually at 1680x1050. Seems as though any game these days can require tweaking up or down. IMO HL2 still has some of the best graphics of late.

Yes, I agree with you on HL2 having the best graphics ever. That's why I really want to buy it. However, I'm still scared that it's not going to work properly for me.

Which GPU dirvers are you using?

I haven't run HL2 since I was on 5.9s or 5.10s, or earlier. I'm currently on 5.11s. It's been my experience that game performance can be a bit of a crap shoot, even on the same laptop, graphics card, and drivers. FEAR, for example, was a huge performance disappointment for me, not to mention the boring gameplay, yet the rest of the world is gah-gah about it. Just give HL2 a go and see what happens. HL2 "seems" to have been fairly forgiving and runable for most. Good luck.

HL2 works well with medium to high settings in 1280x800 rez. Hope this helps and go out and get the GAME!! You will not be sorry. Just picked up COD2, haven't installed the game. Can't wait!

I know that the X700 in my 8104 will be able to run the game properly. I'm just scared of HL2's famous stuttering problem, which I experienced while playing the demo.

Fort those who are not familiar with this problem: HL2 demo has a very good Frame per sec for me, but when there is a change of sound in game (when I enter a new room for example) the FPS drops for a second creating stuttering...

here is a good word of advice... although i dont have 8104, when you do get hl2 which first of all is and amazing game, after the steam installs it goto the options and goto audia they decrease you sound quality to low, this helped my laptop a lot now I play Counter-strikeL source and get about 100+ fps all the time!

also: get the omega drivers from driverheaven these will improve your gameplay by a bit.

Hi

HL2 works fine for me at full Res using the factory defaults,
haven't updated any drivers at all.

I finally decided to buy CS only... Steam is charging 72 USD (with taxes) for the package I wanted to get (which includes HL2 and CS)!!! This is just f***ing overpriced for me...
