Alienware nightmare!, Please Help! =\

Hi all, i'm a "n00b" here so I apologize if I ask any stupid questions or if i'm not too familiar with some hardcore computer lingo and stuff.

First of all I would like to say that I was really really looking forward to receiving my system (specs shown in my signature), and once it finally arrived I was very happy and excited to finally have it in my possesion.

Unfortunately I later found out that I had made 2 very bad decissions when purchasing this system:

#1. I should have got at least the 1 year waranty, but instead I just got the stupid 90 day waranty.

#2. I honestly think I shouldnt have opted for a "mobile desktop" with a desktop processor, because I think that is the source of all my problems with this computer.

Well the system ran fine for about the first month and I honestly considered it to be my "prized possesion." Then one day I was playing World or Warcraft and it shutdown by itself (fans didn't even turn on). As if it just died on me. I called tech support and he walked me thru a number of troubleshooting methods, he had me remove various components (battery, ram, cd-rom drive) one by one to try to pin-point the problem. Eventually he came to the conclusion that it was a problem with the motherboard. Thankfully they said they would fix it, they even sent me a pre-paid shipping label.

After I sent it to them I monitored my email day after day to check on the "phases" of the repair process. However it was taking an awful long time so I ended up calling them. They apologized for the delay and told me that they were experiencing a high volume in the repair department ( ... not a good sign i would think... ) So almost a month later, literally 25+ days after I sent it to them, they finally sent it back to me.

Upon receiving it the problem seemed to be solved and I was notified that they had replaced the motherboard. I also went out and bought an Antec notebook cooler because my friend suggested I do so.

Well, about a month and a half later, my system started shutting down by itself and the fans would go on full blast (similar to how a car's radiator will turn on full blast after you turn off a car, to try to cool down the engine). So I assumed it was an overheating issue. This would happen while I was playing games but not all the time. And sometimes it would happen if I was just surfing the net or just doing a scandisk, so i'm not sure if it depends on the workload...

I called Alienware and I spoke to customer support. I told her about the problems I was having and I asked to speak to tech support. She told me that she could not transfer me to tech support because my warranty had expired. So then I told her to transfer me to her manager or someone who I could talk to that could help me resolve my issue. She then told me that she could not do that either, and all i could speak to was customer support. I was thinking WTF good is that gonna do? I then informed her of how unsatisfied I am with their product and what a big disappointment it has been.

Anyways... with all that background info disclosed, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how I can fix this problem because it looks like i'm not gonna get any more help from Alienware...

If someone could please help me with my problem I would so greatly appreciate it! =\

Things to take into consideration:

- Not sure if the Antec notebook cooler (cools by blowing air up into the notebook) was helping that much, so I purchased a Titan Serina (cools by sucking all the hot air from under the notebook and venting it thru the back)... however neither seem to be solving my problem.

- Already tried to prop up the rear of the notebook while its on either cooling pad for better air flow.

- Already used canned air to get all the dust out... numerous time mind u.

- Already replaced those lil thermal sticky pads in between the heatsink/cpu and heatsink/gpu with thin layers of polysynthetic thermal silver compound.

- Im using Speedfan to monitor the temperature, (idle: 40-50c, heavy load: 55-70c ... and sometimes it says 1 degree celsius, whats up with that? )

- I've already removed and tested the battery and each stick of ram to see if they were causing the problem.

- This prolly doesnt matter, but mouse and keyboard being used are USB.

- Ive heard of GetThermal and some sort of flash bios thingy to adjust fan settings, but i dont know where to get or how to use either of those things. Also i'm not sure if either of those options would make my problems worse cuz i have no idea how to use either...

Someone please help me.. tyvm in advance...

PM one of the Alienware reps on the forum, they might be able to help you out

Please keep us updated on what happens. I know that your warranty has expired, but it appears that you have a problem that wasn't properly solved while the system was still under warranty.

My opinion only, you should be able to work something out with them. Either having them take another shot at fixing the problem or at the very least selling you an extended warranty so that you both get something out of the deal.

?

Thanks for the swift reply. How do i get in touch with a Alienware rep here? Also, won't they just say "Sucks to be you!" or something along those lines if my 90 warranty is over?

The customer service rep told me that I could purchase a 1-year-special-service-crappy-deal-thingy, but that only gives me access to the Alienware tech support over the phone... and I dont think that would be worth $130...

Well, phone tech support is unlikely to solve your problem.
Some may say "It sucks to be you", but move it up the chain.

Someone will realize that your laptop never functioned properly from the beginning and that a happy customer is a repeat customer.

You also have friends, family, and forums that would love to hear how Alienware did the right thing even after your warranty had expired.

That would be nice if they actually did something about this, but I never really thought of corporate ppl as being user-friendly.

Thanks for yer input tho. In your opinion, how should I go about "moving it up the chain" if the customer service ppl wont let me talk to anyone? Should I write a letter or something? I'll try sending an email to Alienware, but I have a bad feeling that it might not do me any good. =\

Also, does anyone know if the Bios flash thing or if the GetThermal thing would be useful to me and my situation?

I would call between 9am and 5pm and ask to speak to a sales or support manager. Explain your situation. If they say they can't help you, nicely ask for their name, and ask them the name of their supervisor. Thank them and call their supervisor and explain your situation again. Write down the name of everyone that you speak with. If anybody is particulary helpful let them know and ask them who else might be able to help you. If someone can't approve it, ask them the name of the person authorized to approve it.

The times that I've spoken to them, they appear to really value customer satisfaction. After all, we don't buy the brand for the glowing eyes do we?

Just don't expect the person who answers the phone to be your only hope. They have been trained to follow the rules, managers can bend the rules. Be polite and friendly and don't give up until they fix your laptop!

does the usa not get a standard 1 year warranty cover like the uk ? its the law over here that anything sold is guaranteed 1 year from the manufacturer/seller. then the warranty goes on after that, but most tab it onto the first year, but basically even if i didnt buy the warranty, i would be covered for a year anyway.

please tell me the us is the same as uk, as 90 days seems to scabby, and also

why teh fux, did u only get a 90 day warranty, was it a mistake or did you think that a laptop from AW will never die ?

as all laptops from AW or the majority of them have prblems with overheating and such like.

hope you get the prob fixed asap, and by scabby AW

Ty for yer advice Seven, ill try to push hard to get my issue addressed by the higher powers that be. I'm still not getting my hopes up tho, but i hope they're as considerate as they were in your experiences.

As for the 1 year waranty, I have no idea. Upon purchasing the system I was unaware of the flaws of the Alienware desktop replacements. Prior to doing business with Alienware, I was influenced by the media and pretty much assumed that they were the masters of creating hardcore gaming machines. Therefore I wrongfully assumed that the 90 day waranty would be good enuf . I didnt find out about the issues regarding Alienware systems until i started reading forums, when I was searching the internet for a way to fix my problem.

I guess I shoulda really done my homework on Alienware before deciding on spending my money on such an expensive investment.

I guess the ppl at Alienware can either laugh their ass off at my expense ... ...

... or they could do the right thing and help resolve my issue... However I am not holding my breath for the latter...

GetThermal is a program you can download that was created by Clevo for testing purposes in their labs. It monitors the temps of your critical components and allows you to modify fan settings. I'd hold off on changing the fan settings for now and just get a record of the temps of your hardware when the computer shuts down. Could give you an indication of what's going wrong. The bios update was released by Sager and you can download it from its website or one of its reseller's. It'll void your warranty, but since it already "sucks to be you" you really ought to do it. It changes the fan settings from their factory default to run more appropriately.

Also, are you getting any artifacting on the screen before it shuts down? And since you already put AS5 on your CPU and GPU I'd imagine you made sure the plastic film on each has been taken off?

It shuts down when it reaches around 65c or higher, and no i dont get any artifacts on screen prior to it doing so. Its weird tho, cuz sometimes SpeedFan says 1c before it shutsdown, so i'm not sure whats up with that. I did make sure all the plastic film was removed from the surfaces before I applied the polysynthetic thermal silver compound.

Also, a number of ppl r suggesting i still attempt to contact the higher powers at Alienware to inform them of my situation in hopes that they would be kind enough to help me resolve my problem. So I am still a bit hesitant to try to flash the bios with that Sager bios thing.

Btw, where do I download GetThermal anyway? I cant seem to find it online, and all the links i find to it are dead.

As for the bios thing, is there a specific one i should get for my particular system? I would hate to accidentally use the wrong one, and i'm not too familiar with flashing bios.

Alienware's Warranty:

"If we determine that the problem with the product is not covered by the limited product warranty, we will inform you of alternative solutions that may be available to you on a fee-for-service basis."

Hopefully, that will get something going for you.. even if its at a cost... much better than having it as a $3000 paperweight..

Update:

*sigh* Ok I tried to turn on the notebook late last night and it locked up upon entering Windows XP. I was forced to do a hard shutdown, however when i tried to boot it up again it would power on but it wouldnt do anything else. It would just hang there at a black screen without even loading bios... aww crap... seems like my situation is just getting worse and worse...

Thank you so much for offering your help Steve! I pm'd u the info, and I look forward to hearing from you.

I noticed a while ago that the 90 day warranty showed up in the configurator.

I've never bought an extended warranty, but I wouldn't drop this much money without at least a year. That used to be AW's standard.

I believe AW will fix your computer out of warranty, but you'll have to pay shipping and labor in addition to vendor cost for the parts.
