Might be time for another notebook purchase

Well, the prognosis for my Sager 5680 is not looking good. I thought it was the LCD inverter board, but a local tech ordered one, installed it, and still the same problem - the backlight goes out after a minute of boot or coming out of suspend. I was probably going to wait another year to buy something but it looks like it'll be a lot sooner than that if the motherboard is fried.

My first thought is something like the Sager 5720. I've decided I want something a little bit lighter and a bit more battery friendly than the p4 in my 5680, as well as a fan that's not as loud. I am a bit wary about purchasing another Clevo though. I guess I'm bitter about the 5680 dying after less than two years, but maybe I'll look into extended warranty or something. Does anybody know if you can do a trade-in for a 5720? I would guess probably not, but who knows maybe they can salvage it for parts or something.

So basically I'm looking for a pentium-M 2.0 ghz or so and a Nvidia 7800GTX or an ATI with as much power and in the $2k price range. I was thinking about holding out for an Mac with an intel processor or holding out for dual-cores, but because of various factors I'll have to make a purchase in late Dec. or early Jan if the 5680's motherboard is truly dead so those considerations are basically out.

I've looked at some Dell offerings today. The XPS looks decent, but maybe costs a bit more than the Sager 5720 as offered from PCTorque.

So I guess my question is what are the other offerings out there? Arus, Alienware (probably too pricey for me), others?

Thanks for the input

Asus Z70VA. A sleek, professional notebook in a carbon-fiber casing, with enough muscle to run a bunch of todays games. All without the usual that comes with a system like that: fat, heavy, ugly, etc...

Thanks for the input. I looked at that model at http://www.jncs.com/php/sys/index.php?id=as-z70va
but I'm not thrilled with the screen or the graphics card. Are there other options for those features from someone else?

The X700 is a pretty capable graphics card, albeit not in the same ballpark as the nVidia 7800.

The 5720 is going to give you the most powerful system for the best price. The XPS is also good but you'll need a coupon or promotion to make it affordable.

Not many units offer the X800, so if you want good gaming you'll probably be looking at Sager (or another Clevo), Dell, Hypersonic, or Alienware. Failing that, the X700 or 6600 are good options and add a lot more choices. The X1600 is supposed to be announced soon and could be out in a few months though.

5720 is really the only choice otehr than dell for the 7800gtx.

Thanks for the responses guys. It looks like it's either the XPS or the 5720. Anybody know if the 5720's 7800 is upgradeable?

well it will depend. If nvidia can deliver a card thats simular in power requirements and size, it might be. But don't hold your breath. The Sager is 5720 is a great laptop, but IMO its fugly. I like the Gen 2/9300's better.
