Unacceptable.
This makes me question as to whether there really are ANY 24bit LCD's for notebooks. Dell, Apple, IBM and sager all use 18bit displays for their notebook computers. I have yet to find definitive proof from any manufacturer using 24bit displays. I know they exist for desktop LCD monitors but what happened to the notebook market? I guess it really doesn't matter much considering with the current LCD advances and GPU technology it's not really noticeable by 99.9% of the public. I guess you can throw this in with the "dead pixel" conspiracy as another industry "secret"

lol, agreed... It could also be a way of making high res LCDs at a reasonable price... I'd rather have a notebook LCD with UXGA and 18 bit than a desktop LCD at XGA with 24 bit...

Well, it appears that Sony is using this same screen on their PCG-GRX670, part number a8059922a. consequently, the price on this is $500. I wonder if you could just buy one of theirs to get a replacement for a broken screen?

Unfortunately, Sony doesn't give any specs on it either. I think we'll just have to give it some time.

I'm still debating which one to get, the 8890 or the 5680. I am very picky on screen quality. The 5680 looks better, but doesn't have as many colors?

If anyone finds out the specs of the 8890, if it's better than what's out now for say the 8887, then let us know please! comparisons are always good.

I have a Sony PCG-GRX670 which I bought just over a year ago. It's out of warranty now and the LCD (16.1" UXGA) has begun to flicker and go almost completely black every few seconds. I have to push the "lid closed" switch with a paper clip to get the display back It's probaby the backlight going out. It gets better if I turn the brightness down a couple notches, but I like a bright screen to ease eye strain. The funny thing is that this started after I removed some Adobe software and the Adobe Gamma Loader which is in the Startup folder, but putting the gamma loader back doesn't help. I'm still trying to remove any possibility of software issues causing this before I bite the bullet and send the whole notebook to San Diego for repairs. I'm pretty sure it's the hardware since it flickers some while booting up.

First question:
Can someone tell me how to find out exactly which model of LCD I have?

XP just lists it as "default monitor" with no model number... and there's no info relating to it in the Sony documentation that came in the box. I want to make sure I have the correct drivers installed for it. I assume it's a Hitachi (aka Sager 8887), judging by other threads posted here, but I'm not sure.

Second question:
I bought a Sony external LCD last night to hook up to the notebook while the primary is on the blink (literally). However, XP won't let me make the external monitor the primary instead of secondary, since the Primary option is greyed out in the Display control panel for the second monitor. Is this only possible through BIOS settings?

My 5680's wideangle UXGA 15" looks like the 16" in that picture. I dont get any of the wide viewing angles in those pics on the first page.......
