Very annoying wireless internet problem

Sometimes it doesn't happen, sometimes it does. Fairly often I am getting disconnected from my wireless and recieve this message:

I click it and I get this screen:

Sometimes I have to go through this process five or six times before it actually connects again. Considering my laptop is mainly placed right beside the wireless router, distance should not be a problem. This is not very good when I am trying to play an online game or download something and get disconnected and struggle to reconnect. Thanks for you help.

Well first of all you need to enable WEP! Oh wait a minute don't bother I'm outside your house in my car I'll do it for you lmao

On the serious tip: Internal or PCMCIA wi-fi card?

If your laptop is mainly right next to the router, why don't you just use a direct connection using ethernet? It would be so much faster and you wouldn't have this problem...

I do have my router set up to only access my mac address, is there something else I should be doing? Can you help me with that?

Well I would need a little more info first. Is it an internal or PCMCIA wi-fi card on your notebook? Who's the manufacturer of your router/access point and what model is it? etc. The more information you could give the better. My thoughts if you have a third party wi-fi card would be the Window XP wireless configurator is conflicting with the third party software...this is especially common with Linksys products and such...If it's the other scenario we'll keep deducing options...

It is mainly near the router but sometimes I take it away and it's also a hassle to constantly be switching the plugs when i take it from school and stuff. Turn it on an bam im connected. It's not actually faster with wires because of the cable modem cap, and don't transfer much over my network so I don't notice a speed reduction. I also had some problems accessing my router whatsoever through wires even after 2 hours on customer support. Ended up insalling my wireless driver and it picked up the router, so that's all I use now. Also I would have to constantly reset the dmzs of my two routers in order for things to function properly. I guess that was a little lengthy

So you're 100% positive you have the latest software drivers for the wireless card and the latest firmware for the wireless router correct?

Did you install ANY Linksys software on your notebook? Besides the driver for the card...

I got the drivers that came on the floppy, and i havn't updated any firmware, cause i remember on my old router i did that and i wasn't able to connect to it for a while. my dad was pissed. I guess i may try that though....

Use the utility that came with your wireless card instead of using window's because win xp will drop your connection while its searching for a better one...

Search for zero configuration wireless or something like that... sorry typing this as i am on the road with my bluetooth phone as a modem

The drivers on the floppy are old so update those. Also, there was a major firmware release for the WRT54G (I've setup about a dozen of those bastards eheh) so make sure to pop to update that too! Start there...

That way you know you've got the most updated software. If it still does it make sure there's not that damn Linksys configuration utility mumbo jumbo software on their or disable XP's automatic wireless utility..can't have both working othewise they conflict. Also, make sure to enable WEP and make sure to specify in your wireless card driver properties for the highest throughput..otherwise it just chooses "auto" or whatever and that doesn't work well..it's best to choose "Highest" or "54g" or whatever it may be on your setup...

Sometimes when I take it to school i do need it to be searching for other connections. as well as easily change between my home and school routers.

I had that problem when I first connected to my wireless network. What I discovered was that I had enabled "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network" in the Authentication tab on Wireless network properties. You might have a look in there.

Hey, me too!

I have made sure all my drivers are up to date, WEP is enabled, installed the latest router firmware, etc etc, and I have the same problems where my connection is dropped sporatically. Sometimes it takes up to 15-20 mins to successfully connect again.

My router is about 8 feet from my 5680, although it's just on the other side of a wall. The connection is strong at 70-80% most of the time, but all of a sudden it'll drop. Sometimes over and over.

I even thought I was being sneaky and started connecting using channel 13--outside the common channel 1 to 11 range of most wireless devices--but it hasn't helped.

It sucks that I can't count on my connection when I need it.

If there is more insight out there, I'd love to hear it, too.

Rob

Have you searched this forum to see if any other 5680 owners are having the same problems?
