Is it that big a deal? Im asking cuz COD2 runs so much more smoothly on DX7 than DX9 on my rig!

Yea.... Maybe take a screen shot of the same scene rendered in different modes and see the difference?

I would do it but im too lazy...

The Quake 3 engine wasn't made for DX9

Well, look at it, is it a big deal for you? The graphics and effects are turned down or non existant in dx7 but is dx9 even playable?

Couldn't find anything on COD2 but to give you an rough idea on the differences in directx versions capabilities have a look at this (different directx versions in HL2):

here's a couple screenshots showing the difference in COD2:

The amount of performance loss you get with DX9 is terrible for just some fancy bumpmapping.

DX7 you can get an avg of 100fps
DX9 you're lucky to get 40fps

Yes there is a big difference, unfortunetly the above link doesnt show the difference quite as good as it should because the player is looking at nothing for some reason. The playability of the game is quite rediculous, yes the graphics are nice but they certainly arent the best Ive seen, and yet it plays much slower than it should. I can play DOD source in 1920x1200 with full hdr with out too much problem yet can barely play this in 1440x900.

But I am at a bit of a loss here, I downloaded the HL2 demo and it played very smoothly on my rig. I am assuming that its running on DX9. The rendering is breathtaking. With COD2, running on DX9 slows things down to such an extent that at least for me, it becomes useless! What gives???

Different engines, you cant really compare games like that made with different game engines. The COD 2 engine uses many more dirext x9 effects than the HL 2 engine.

DX9

DX7

DX9

DX7

I don't think all those fancy DX9 affects like shadowing, lighting, and bumpmapping should casus problems. FarCry is a more demanding game then CoD and it has true DX9 affects. CoD just runs like ass.

the quality of lighting, shadow, and texture details are noticeably better with dx9, and that's the power of shader model 3.

I can run FarCry with HDR on + PS3 and get better frames per second then that.

BTW the CryEngine is the best engine, did you know it has ground deformation?

cod2 is based on a modified quake3 engine which explains why it sucks bad with dx9.

Guys guys where did you get that idea? CoD2 is not based on quake3 engine, CoD2 is Direct3D not OpenGL.
well pictures show how dx9 is better than dx7

let's see how will be the dx10

it's certainly not a "completely new" engine building from the ground and up. would you even consider buying this game if it's advertised as based on a 6 years old now open source engine

COD2 is based on RTCW which was based on Q3, you can even open up files in COD2 that are either identical, almost identical or even mention Quake 3 / RTCW in them. Then there is the almost identical file structure, commands, the list gos on...

All they did was pad out the Q3 engine with more graphical features (and make it ****ing slow at the same time).

Plasma engine for the game and Havok (2?) engine for the physics I think...
