My laptop died twice in the last 2 weeks. Same thing happened both times. Laptop froze, when trying 2 restart it then freezes at some point during the windows loading bar so theres absolutely nothing ya can do with it.

If you try going into safe mode it freezes at loading your personal settings.
If you try to reinstall windows it says that "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer"

The only thing i could do both times is use the recovery disk. Then ya have to go 2 the trouble of reinstalling everything and changing all your settings back to normal (Its been so long since iv seen those arrows on the shortcut icons and heard that annoyin windows startup tune). I just hope i dont have to do it a third time. I thought this driver might help
For windows setup to detect your hd you need the driver listed under official aw drivers, chose the Raid or non-raid depending on ur hd config, which seems to be raid, and then extract them to a blank diskette and when windows setup asks for a third party driver press f6 so you can select the driver and install windows successfully.

i would say that your HD seems to be busted, my computer did things like that and it was the hard drive which was busted, had to change it and use the old one as a secondary until it crapped and didn't even let the comp boot.

Question....

I just upgraded my BIOS and KB controller... are there only two modes for the fan using Fn + F2? because it appears that ther is Silent Mode and Full Power Mode only.

Is there any way to set it to automatic control???

actually there are only two modes: auto and full, the thing is that when you switch to full and then switch to auto, the fans simply turn off because the temps are under the threshold, when it heats up again the fans should turn on

The AW7700 no longer shows on the alienware page !
It has sadly been discontinued...i think they won't ever release new drivers for it :P
post #128 of 263
Hmm..
The 7700 is longer away from the Hompage...

On the Support Site i can select it...
Where do you search your drivers for the 7700? On the Manufactors Site or on the AW Site? I think the Hardware Manufactor update the drivers for the 7700..
Ps: Where do you find this Atheros Driver???? I search on the Internet but found nothing..What is your secret?

I usually search on the AW site for updated drivers (which haven't been updated in a long time) and also on the manufacturer's sites :P

Actually I found this lateest atheros driver on LaptopVideo2Go.com - WLAN Drivers and the older ones i got them fromPhoenix Networks

Are you serious? You CANNOT download drivers for the 7700 anymore?
Chances are. Apparently someone here on the forums tried to get some parts from RJTech.com and they said they were freezing their entire stock pending Clevo's decision to stop making the D900 chassis. Alienware has stopped selling it, so I imagine driver support will be very limited, which is disappointing since Vista launches today.

Hey guys. you gotto help me:

I accidentally deleted my Alienware 7700's spools file (the one for printing) a while back. I was too afraid to reformat because I had to do it about 8months ago and it was a huge process (i had to go out and buy an external floppy drive..and that didnt even do the trick from what I remember).

Well, stupid me, i decided ill "repair" my windows so i can print again. After it installed my screen just stays blank. It never boots into windows. If i go into safe mode, its ok..but still...I cant go into it normally. I tried everything. Now Im trying to reformat and reinstall windows but I cant, and I cant remember how I did it last time...

When I go to reinstall, it shows me my partitions but they are all blank, empty. According the the screen, NONE EXIST to delete, write over, etc. I remember that being a problem last time...

So. Help me. My laptop is just sitting in the corner right now. I cant restore, I cant reinstall apparently (or at least I cant remember how I got it to last time around). An ideas? From what I can remember, the floppy disk thing DIDNT work. I remember returning the floppy drive the next day. Help..please haha.

I should have never set out to repair my windows.

EDIT: Also, I dont have an alienrespawn disc. I just have my support disc and the Windows XP Pro cd that came with the laptop.

Are you trying to save any of the data that was on your hard drive? It's hard to provide a specific answer without more details on the exact steps you did that caused windows to not function (1,2,3,etc.).

To "repair" or reformat windows, you will need a floppy with your hard drive's drivers (Non RAID or RAID) before windows setup will recognize your hard drives. (Alienware will supply you with one if it did not come with system)

There are a couple ways to "repair" Windows XP, but if you follow these steps, you should be fine: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operat...prepair1_4.htm .

Either way, you will need a floppy with RAID or non-RAID drivers for your hdd controller.

Well, Yeah, I guess I wanted to keep everything on my computer...but as of now I dont care anymore...I'll gladly delete it all if it means my computer will start normally again. Heres the rundown:

1) I couldn't print (deleted spools a while ago for some stupid reason). So I decided to "repair" windows in hopes it would copy over some files I may be missing and wouldn't hurt my comp otherwise (i.e. reinstall the spools file).

2) I stuck in the CD, I selected "install windows" and chose the "upgrade" option, not the full new windows install.

3)It did its thing, but I had to go to school, so I left it installing...

4) I came back and notice my screen was blank, then my computer started itself... So I booted from CD again, and started to reinstall it.. it did its thing, and it asked me if i wanted to install the "Nvidia 6800 go" or not because its not a registered thing or whatever the prompt is.. I selected yes... then it gave my a BlueScreenofDeath.

5)I said "CRAP!" and then I reinstalled and when it prompted me about my 6800 go card i said "no, dont install" figuring ill install the drivers myself after thats all done.

6)it did its thing, finished installing, and restarted...then it brough up the windows loading screen, went blank...and STAYED blank. I let it go for 45 mins to make sure. Nothing happened.

7) I restarted, tried loading the computer on "last good settings that worked"...still the same problem...blank

8)I tried going into safemode to a restore point...i got into safe mode fine, but no restore points were available to use...i guess the windows installation deleted them.

9) I went to try and repartition/reformat (whatever) and under the lists of partitions to select...it says none are available. I couldnt select any partitions. basically, its not reading I have a hard drive. I know under my Dell it used to say "partition 1, 37568 GB" etc. etc. Not this time. And I remember it doing that on my Alienware last time I had to reformat, too.

10)And here I am.

I guess I should go out and get an external floppy and make some boot disks? The thing is, I throught I tried that last time and it didnt work...

Thanks for the details, I know know what you did. The "upgrade" option is not designed to "repair" windows. I personally have no idea if Windows will be bootable after your attempt to "upgrade."

None-the-less, the reason why no hard drives appear when trying to install Windows from the instillation CD is that you must load the specific HDD controller drivers. The only way that Windows XP will accept these HDD drivers is through a floppy (the drivers can be downloaded from Alienware's download area). You will need these drivers for either a complete reformat or a repair. The repair guide link I gave earlier will gives step-by-step information on how to sucessfully repair windows (keeping most of your information that wasn't already destroyed by the "update")

This is an Alienware Support Article explaining how to add the HDD controller drivers at the begining of the Windows XP instillation. Skip to step 10 since you do not need to make changes to your RAID setup. http://4help.alienware.com/cgi-bin/a...i=&p_topview=1

Howdy. Well I got it working again. I ran to wal-mart and bought a USB floppy drive. I did the floppy disk thing, and it worked. I just reformated and installed a fresh copy of windows xp pro. I just finished installing all my drivers, etc. Thanks for your help dude. Next time I buy an alienware im definately buying that AlienRespawn thing.
Glad it worked out! I actually got the AlienRespawn DVDs, but don't use it anymore because I upgraded so many things on my computer that it was faster to just do it from scratch...
tokamak you can always use the boot Cd of the respanw kit to make a new image, i made a custom image with some of the drivers i have an most use applications itunes VLC, FF etc....
I thought about trying that, but I have never had a chance/remembered in the past few reformats... Maybe I'll remember next time?
