Seeking xorg.conf expertise

OK, this has nothing to do with my Sager, per se, or Fedora, but xorg.conf and nvidia. I've been through the nvidia documentation many times and have tried a wide variety of things, but some features are not working as expected and I seek any help and advice. Here's the scoop:

I have a new Sager 5720 (love it!). On the laptop itself, I want to ALWAYS run 1920x1200, the highest native resolution, and mirror my desktop on an external monitor. Most of the time, the machine is connected to a ViewSonic A90f+ (CRT) which claims to do up to 1920x1400. However, I can't ever seem to get it to work right when in X.

First, I always have to have the monitor plugged in when I boot for it to come up at all. I can't F-F7 to turn it off/on. When I'm in text mode, everything works fine - what I see on my lcd is identical to the CRT and the desktop sizes are the same. As soon as I start X, though, my lcd remains at 19x12 but my crt goes to a virtual of 19x12 with a window that's 1600x1024, forcing me to scroll around on the crt. I don't

I have tried 101 things in my xorg with different results, none giving me what I want. I've tried twinview (which was cool, but didn't work), the more proper two-devices method, you name it. If anyone could make suggestions about my xorg.conf below and/or post theirs in a similar situation, I'd appreciate it. It's almost, almost as if the CRT is telling X that it can't take the 1920 resolution and I have no idea where the non-1200-width comes from.

So, here it is. There are likely goofs in it, etc., as I've played with it a LOT. I've taken out some really obvious things, like the "Files" section.

Thanks.

Change external monitor mode lines

Hiya,

Well, the obvious thing is you have your mode lines for the external monitor set to do 1920x1200 so that's what you get. Change those to be accurate for the monitor.

Oh, and change the screen size in the screen section too.

Ciao.

OK, this one first.

WTF? The first thing I did when I got my machine is check the specs on this CRT to make sure and I *swear* I saw that it did up 19x14. Even our sysadmin looking over my shoulder saw it...but you're right, there it is. Weird. The specs are the first thing that comes up in Google. Boy, I wonder what I saw.

Chalk it up to me being stupid. Thanks. Next post, though...

I'm not sure I follow. I want 1920x1200, so that's why I set it at that rate.

To what? Again, my apologies, I'm not sure I follow.

HOWEVER, now that we've established that I can't read a spec sheet, from what I can tell from the nvidia documentation, I ought to be able to run my LCD at 1920x1200 and my CRT at 1600x1200 at the same time without resorting to a scrolling desktop. I'll play around and see what I can get, but any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

your monitor isn't wide-screen, there's no way it can run 1920x1200 res.

...but I know I can run it at 1600x1200 and, if I read these nvidia docs correctly, I can do so while keeping my lcd at 1920x1200. We'll see!

It's not the first time a manufacturer has changed specs mid product run. I didn't doubt you. I find it odd that it will do a refresh rate of 61Hz. That would atleast explain the 16x12 with a virtual desktop.
Try dropping the modeline for the 19x14 on monitor1 and remove the entry for 19x14 in the screen section for screen1.
