metal frame and hinges?

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
I saw a commericial for IBM and one of the points was that the laptop had metal reinforced hinges.

I know hinge problems seem to be too common for what we pay for them.

So my question is are there any low end (but new) laptops that have either metal frames, screens and or hinges? Spending $5,000 on a high end is not a option.

Price target is >1500, if possible. This would primarily be for school and home use by my son. He's a freshmen in high school and its time for him to branch off the "family PC". This is not to be a gaming machine.

So I need to find some low end but tougher laptops, so his reward doesn't go down after the accidental damage warranty is up.

Idea's?

Thanks Dan

Twinhead N15RB sounds like what you're after. It has a Magnesium-Aluminum alloy chassis, spill proof keyboard, rubber mounted hard drive and starts at around $1400.

This is the only good thing I'll say about Dell's I6000 for a while, so listen up:

It had metal hinges inside a plastic shell, or casing.

/end compliment.

My Tosh has that too.*

* I believe.

My first portable was an IBM and the steel hinges had so much tension built in
that they completely destroyed the lid and base that they were mounted to.

I have since had better reliability from Dell Latitude than Sony VAIO.
