Inspiron 630m (M140) Has Samsung Screen... Which Does Yours Have?

I ran PowerStrip on the new Inspiron 630m w/ TrueLife and confirmed what I thought after comparing it to the XPS Gen 2 (mine currently has a Samsung Screen) - The model for this 630m is a SEC3157.

It has the EXACT same drawbacks as the XPS M170 (XPS Gen 2) systems with earlier Samsung screens... washed out colors and horrible light leakage, and grainy like heck.

If other members who have recently received their 630m's or M140's, May you please see which screen you have... because this one is bad, it pales in comparison to the wonderful screen on the 700m (makes its look like an Ultrasharp ).

Thanks

Go here:

Download powerstrip and run it. Then look up the Model number in the PowerStrip program.

Will do. One moment and I'll let you know the results.

What is the manufacturer of your 700m screen??? Anyone also knows what all the brands/models Dell are using for the 700m???

Wow this is disconcerting. Yesterday I ordered a loaded XPS M140 after going back and forth between the M140 and 700m. I decided on the M140 after trying the 700m at a Dell kiosk and finding the keyboard just a bit too small. Although there was no M140 on display to compare it to I figured the size would be just about perfect, between the 700m and the 6000. Now I see this and I am not a happy camper. After I stopped by the Dell kiosk I went to Circuit City and played with a very nice Sony notebook, the VAIO VGN-AX570G which also has a 14" display. The display was absolutely gorgeous and it felt great too. Thanks for posting this, I just might cancel my order and get the Sony. Unfortunately if I do buy the Sony I won't have the great Dell warranty, with the M140 I got 3 years plus complete care but what's the point if the display is so lousy?

I have a 630m. I ran powerstrip and it shows the monitor model as QDS0048. I have the TrueLife display. I think the display is excellent so Im guessing the TrueLife screens are made by a different manufacturer.

Strafe, if you can find out the part number for that screen from your packing slip that would be great. I am going to have DELL send me that screen you have so I can swap it and see if its an improvement over the SEC3157 which is a TrueLife display and that is what bites.

The 700m screen is made be AUO. Sorry about the AIO typo, it's a AUO screen.

They should put an AUO 14.1" Glossy screen on the M140/630m, instead of taking Samsung matte screens with specs that belong on a B120 and slapping a glossy coat over it and calling it a TRUELIFE for M140s & 630m LOL.

Doesn't having the green WiFi indicator constantly on w/the Intel WLAN mini-PCI cards get irratating?

If so, get a couple of Broadcom 1370's or 1470's with the latest drivers so the WiFi light blinks based on packet activity similar to the HD activity light. Much more useful rather than static on/off IMHO.

BTW: How does the 24-bit SigmaTel in the 630m/M140 compare w/the older 16-bit SigmaTel in the XPSGen2/M170?

I just cancelled my 630m order yesterday and after reading this, I may not re-order till I see some additional reviews.

FYI - I cancelled my order because it had been sitting in pre-production for 4 days. The sales rep I finally talked to told me that it was on hold because the 100 gig 7200 RPM drive was backordered.

So I cancelled the order and guess what I got today. An email from Dell telling me my order was being delayed because of an out-of-stock part. Well Duh!

I am not happy with Dell at this point, and now this news makes me ever more leary of ordering a 630m/XMS140.

It's really hard to make out on the packing slip but I think it says the manufacturer part# is WD372. The item number is 320-4419.

Sorry SPEEDYwithJJ, I meant AUO, its a typo. I'll re-edit that post.

WHOA, just realized they make a 14.1 WXGA screen @ 1440x900, for those looking for a higher resolution panel: http://www.auo.com/auoDEV/products.p...=14&items_id=2

That bites... if they share the same Part# and Item#, it might be hard to impossible to get the same screen Strafe has. Either way, just to be on the safe side, I will email Dell and request a new screen to be sent out.

I did this with the XPS Gen 2 and they shipped the part and i swapped it. Hope they do it again.

Just FYI, I ordered the M140. I know they are the same system, but if that matters at all, I wanted to mention it.

Good luck with the new screen!

Trixie, what is your impression of the screen? It sounds like you have the same one as NYCscorpio2000...do you share his thoughts on the poor quality? Mine is supposed to be delivered tomorrow, and now I'm nervous!
