New Sager 8790 Model release pics are up - Page 27

Well, maybe when mid-March (oooh ides of march) or April comes around I will either have saved up over $2200 and have bought something else or I will have purchased another custom desktop to assemble (I love assembling computer components and making them work).

Or as a last resort I could do what my younger sister is doing and purchase a new care and use the money as a down payment. ( I think there was a thread like that somewhile back).

The problem with waiting now is the timing.

I am already running out of time for the notebook to be really useful. To be honest I thought that I would have it by now even though my projected plans didn't even anticipate the funds until early June for a $3000 Alienware notebook. Once I'm done with school, I won't have much of a reason to be sitting on my ass somewhere on long shifts doing nothing but waste time. I'll either have a job or be studying for my MCSA certifications at home. This may have all been an exercise in patience with the added benefit of several thousand dollars saved up in the bank (first time in 5 years that would happen).

Really now, this whole 8790 thing is really starting to piss me off. No informtion, no updates, no clarifications on specs. The anticipation has worn away my patience. At this rate I'll graduate with an Associates of Computer Science in May before I get anything (already ordered cap and gown). I'm really starting to think a Shuttle might just be a better LAN machine.

I love Sager notebooks and I will continue to read the forums and post illogical answers, but my ability to wait is comming to an end. The technology will be changing real soon and the buying schedule is almost over. My friends and all of my gaming buddies buy computers on a schedule. We calculate the time table of product releases based on their actual release dates (not projected like the 8790 is) and then calculate the estimated time between upgrades to that product line to come up with an estimated product lifespan.

Kevin, Travis, and I have come to the conclusion that the 4780 and 8890 lines are at their end. They are essentially miniturized desktops using state-of-the-art technology as of 6 months ago. Unfortunately for the 8790, its only claim to fame is it's new video card matted with the 4780's body and the 8890's internals. There isn't enough of a technological difference to warrent a projected maximum lifespan of only six more months - at best - before we start seeing better components start entering the notebook form-factor or at least better prices on today's equipment.

Bottom line:
In order for the 8790, the Dell XPS, and all of the clones and derrivatives to have been truely competitive and practical, they needed to have been released in early January.
All of the gamers in the greater Charleston area are either buying up last years components at rock bottom prices (over-clocking experiments) and/or are saving up for this summer for the new product line releases.

In the end, I will wait one more month of funding and buy either a much discounted 4780 or build a mobile Shuttle w/ LCD monitor system for my gaming pleasure. I still want a Sager, but I think the current product line has begun to exceed it's functional life-span. Note: I mean this for purchasing reasons only, since the machines will do well with all of the software for 2004. However, 2004 is about as far as I expect last years tech to last.

Kevin's time-table:
Systems and components purchased in early 2003:
-Update minor components late 2003 / early 2004 - video card, sound card, memory if necessary (broken or no support).
-Update major components mid to late 2004 (motherboard/processor and memory [if necessary for compatablility]). New tech will start to arrive mid Summer to early Fall 2004: let someone else beta test problems and replace everything no later than December 2004/January 2005 to catch winter sales and over stock sales.

2005/2006: Update schedule status: pending further research and informtion.

Totally agree SEMC. Also, the longer they take to release the 8790, the shorter in time the gap will be with the Dothan processor (a Centrino 2.0 so to speak). The Dothan 1.9 is rummored to equal a P4 3.2 HT while having 3 times the battery life and half the heat. Plus, the already-being-developped M12 is said be out somewhere in the summer.

These guys got to release this baby right now or else its life spam as the market's top dog will be REALLY short.

Cheers.

Pretty much where I'm at. Got a used A51m that I'm going to grab if the deal goes through. If not, well... I was looking at the Voodoo m855's... kills me to settle for a 15" screen tho'. GAH (and yes, I know all of you love your 15" screens, but I've had 2 1/2 yrs too much of one and want more). 8890 was tempting, but I finally decided that I didn't want to pack around a small house everyday. The 5680... well, that's just gotta be one of the ugliest laptops I've seen. To each our own, eh. The search goes on. Fujitsu? Darn it, I was set on the 8790. Now I have to start the search over

I hung on the soon date, but that's come and passed. Figured I'd have a new laptop by now or at least one ordered and processing. Now... feels like it won't be until next year since we haven't heard anything for 2 weeks (altho' I know Murphy'll slap me down by releasing the 8790 the day after I buy something else )

*chants I'm tired of my 700mhz Sony silently to self*

I am going to get the shuttle for the AMD 64 3400 and get a real 17" Samsung display for about $2000 or less. I hate not getting a notebook, but given my uncertain future (deployment, or worse voluntarily spending 3 months in Dubai, UAE to study for the MCSA exams (IT classes cheap out there and come with test at end of seminar), plus the parents are living out there since Dad got a 5 year contract to do network engineering at the oil refineries out there); I can't come up with a valid excuse to buy a notebook that is even more obsolete than the 4780 is now.

Again if it were only a speedup change rather than a paradigm shift in products then I would just buy the notebook and shut up already. Well you can't change what has happened, but let me tell you. Sager still makes the best notebooks for the price they cost and I really want one. Maybe next year with the Donthans or the next gen 64bit procs. I can't hardly wait until Jan 2005 comes around and I have another $2000 to spend.

well atleast Dubai is more Euronized I call it from all the English and British that go there.... Still suks but not as bad as the rest of UAE and Saudi... If your a dude you should be good to go, not as many dudes trying to pinch yer rear there as other cities, and they have some decent bars and shops... stock up on underwear, last time I was there they wanted 70 bucks for one pair of granny undies... 135 for a cosmopolitain magazine, no kiding.... and that was a decade ago.... no nudie magz allowed thier illigal and they will put you in jail for it.... Course for galz specially in the military it sucked... long dresses full sleaves and collars with scarves in the heat.... gawdddddddddd... straight slack were allowed but no geans, and I am a country gal, that was almost all my wardrobe all I had for a skirt was my holoween skirt made out of see through lace.......... talk about getting stared at... hehe... they had some decent bars there if you into that thing.. don't forget the major rulz
1. don't make hand gestures with your left hand at no one
(they whipe thier rears with thier left hand only and it is "unclean" to them)
2. don't show anyone the bottom of your feet
( thats saying that they are benieth you and they will come after yer rear with all kinds of weapons)
3. don't look at any local woman if your a guy
( its like saying that you want the woman "in that way" uh huh serious then everyone will come after you, thats a death sentence dude)
4. if you just have to have to take pictures make sure no matter what you get permission before hand, idiot that was on my ship with me while we were shoping in town desided he just had to take a picture and no one would care....... I really don't like being chased with machine guns when all I have is a stinking whalers knife over a idiot that doesn't listen to the rules.... God I really missed my guns that day....
5. pay attension to any briefing you get about the area and new laws and such, and never ever go out by yourself or with an idiot... please play it safe and stay safe

Don't think WUXGA's available in the 17". Only the 15.4". Could be wrong, but it seems that ev'one else's already looked into this. I'm just passing along what I've read a thousand times on here.
From what I've read on here, WUXGA is supposed to come out a couple months after WXGA, and I'll wait for it. The reason I can wait, is because this will be my first laptop replacing a desktop machine. 4 major FPS games are coming out, that being UT2K4, D3, HL2, and T:V later this year. If the 8790 can run them well, then I'll get it and be happy, because these are the games I'll be playing for 3 years.

I know the rules, I've been there a couple of times now. I don't go out much, since there isn't much to see. However, Dubai seems to be an exception for the whole Middle East. The female arabs dress like western people do, and there are very few white robes (males in traditional gear). Wish I could post some of my pics of the place, but I don't know how, nor do I have a scanner. Thanks for the advice though.
yea robvia i agree, the reason I want to wait is because of those games BUT i think I'm gonna go with the Dell XPS due to the fact that it'll probably be cheaper in the end and the fact that I don't gotta wait Don't hold your breath on the WUXGA, I think it'll be a while more than a couple of months. But happy waiting
post #534 of 727
ok SEMC...ok so im a lil outdated. but I did say that were the most euronised city in arabian lands I had been to .... haha and it was yo a decade ago....

I just checked this thread for the first time in a while.. about Doom III...

I have a 9600SE in my Desktop.. I got Doom III (I didn't download it illegally, I swear!) Beta 2 Release, and it runs very poorly.. ~30-45 fps.. but it's playable. It seems like a great game, it's pretty freaky. I first tried it like at 2AM, and my mom had the speakers plugged in at a very high volume, not the headphones.. whew.. I'll just leave it at that.

I liked it though.

Remember that Sager is on the west coast, so they won't open until noon EST. Then PCT has to talk to them, then update their web site. I think that the earliest in the day you would see anything would be 1:00 PM EST.
