If you're tunning up the models texture so high that require the extra 128mb. of VRAM, the laptop will be already be choking. Let's not forget that the M11 will NOT handle Doom3 and HL2 at high texture settings / ressolutions, thus the extra VRAM is reduntant.

Cheers.

... wait then what makes the chip better? is it all hype?
Well no, the M11 128 mb is said to be a 20 to 25% more powerful than the M10Pro 128mb. But the M11 256mb will STILL be only 20 to 25% more powerful.

It's like driving a Porche (360 horsepower or in this case the M11 128) and a Porche Turbo (450 horsepower or in this case the M11 256) competing in a very twisted / bad pavimented circuit (Doom3/HL2 at high res and high model textures). The extra horsepower will not reduce the cronos because the bottleneck is the circuit, not the cars themselves.

Cheers.

I know this has nothing to do with the M11, but I'm concerned about the proccesor the 8790 will use.

According to the specs posted by Adam the fastest Northwood available will be the 3.2 Ghz (correct me if I'm wrong) and the fastest Precott will be the 3.6 Ghz.

After all I've read across the net I can't make my mind, which is fastest, cheaper, and better overall between these two specific models?
The fastest Northwood will be 3.4EE.
I'm not interested in buying a EE processor (mmm... +$400 for 10% increase...), what interests me is knowing which one is better, the 3.2 northwood or the 3.6 prescott
post #567 of 727
Assuming Intel gets a stable 3.6 Prescott out the door, it should be (read: better be) faster than a 3.2 Northwood. However, I would be wary of the heat potential from Prescotts in general. A64s are still on top of my list. Less heat, lower power consumption, more performance, lower price.
Do you think sager will release a good 3.6 Prescott? I'm planning on buying a 8790 (if it arrives in this century) and I can't make my mind, advice is always appreciated

The present Prescotts are evil, stay away from them. They are too damn hot. To give you a feel of how hot they run... read this article.

Intel is tweaking them, hopefully the next batch will be more efficient.

How does the heat affect other parts of the notebook? or it's just an unconfortable feeling while typing?
Oh my... I read the article you posted Xenolith, no doubt, I'm sticking with the Northwood

Well, on top of everything else, 3 ghz+ Prescotss will be a new socket 775 design, so they will be bigger, (and if trends continue) use yet more power, and generate even more heat. All of which make the prospect of the higher end Prescotts being available in a laptop anytime soon seem fairly dim.

So, my conclussion after reading about 5 reviews and many threads is that the prescott sucks, badly.

I mean, yeah, it has more transistors, has a new set of instructions and a better HT, BUT it's too hot, consumes too much power (<-- not sure about this) and it's slower than it's northwood counterparts, these things are VERY important for me, especially because I'm talking about notebooks, and if the reviews are right, Prescott will suck it's batteries dry in a cinch, and if the 3.4 (or 3.2) northwood is faster than the 3.6 Prescott, you can't get lost anywhere. As always, comments appreciated.

Does anyone want a Prescott in their 8790? I understand that's the hold-up on their distribution. Kinda silly to be holding things up for something no one will (or at least shouldn't) want. Maybe they can make them work, but the heat load is going to be really high - not to mention the power requirements.

The only up-side I see to Prescotts is that they should drive the prices of Northwoods down. Everyone who doesn't know will want the "new" chip.

If battery usage is an issue for you, don't get a 8790. Even with a Northwood in there, a charge will last 1-1.5 hours. I'd be willing to bet a Prescott would last less than an hour on a charge (this is just a guess). For battery life, get a Centrino based system. Up to 5 hours on a charge. A 1.7 Ghz Pentium-M (Centrino) is equivilent to a 2.4 Northwood in speed.

I don't want the Prescott chip at all. I'd rather have an AMD 64 chip or better yet the old northwood cores at 3.0 or 3.2. The whole point of waiting was for the new mobo that supports dual channel memory. Otherwise no different from 4780.
I don't need a lot of battery life, I'll use it plugged most of the time, and 1.5 - 2.5 hours (I'm a bit more optimistic because I'll choose the bigger battery if available) is enough for me.

A Centrino? No thanks, that wont run HL2

Looks like we'll be seeing the 8790 in a week or less...Voodoo has their version available for ordering and I have waited 3 months now for this laptop...about time it shows up!!

I would rather not wait for the Prescott, either. I figure the 3.0/3.2 is going to be hot enough w/o adding more heat. I'll pass, thankyouverymuch. Definitely waiting for the dual channel memory. SEMC, don't forget that there's the option for dual HDs, too

Anyone know of an AMD64 laptop w/ 17inch wide screen, full scale keyboard, and a 9700???

(I guess a 8790 but with an AMD64)
