You need to pick a distro, they all have "plain" linux as the core. This site will help: http://distrowatch.com/ "Damn Small Linux" sounds like what you need, but who knows, check the site.

Linux is an open source project. Instead of a single operating system, it's a network of slightly different, but compatible operating systems. I'd like to add that linux isn't for the faint of heart.

you can always build LFS, that will be the most plain linux your way type of thing you'll ever find. If you mean you want "just linux" you can get the kernel @ kernel.org.

i would advice that guy to get, before everything, a live CD of something like Ubuntu.

Linux is just a kernel. It's the packages developed in the Open source world that build around the kernel, that make it into a fully fledged OS. And since it's Open Source, everyone has thier own take on how to do things, so each distro, while using the same kernel (essentially) will be setup differently than the next.

Anyway, linux is linux, most distros will be mostly compatable with eachother.

Checkout the various live CDs out there to get a taste for it. Knoppix, Ubuntu, DSL (Damn Small Linux), etc...

Before downloading and burning off the discs (and even worse wiping your system) make sure all your hardware is supported! (otherwise setup will refuse to continue the install)
