My I6000 won't stay in Standby mode

Hi, my Inspiron 6000 notebook won't stay in Standby mode, anyone know why?

This just started happening 2 days ago. I tried to put it into Standby before I left for work. It showed the proper screen, "Preparing to Standby", then the LCD went black as normal, and I heard it shut off and the power light start doing it's "dim off, dim on" thing. But then less than 5 seconds later, it powered back on. I don't get it?! I tried doing it again after it powered back on, but it only did the same less than 5 seconds after it went into standby. It's a little frustrating, cause I like to put it in Standby while I'm at work, and I leave it running otherwise while I'm at home. But since this started I just turn it off when I leave for work.

Any input and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No, the WAKE ON USB is a feature only in Windows XP MCE (as BIOS stated). He's using XP Pro. You're right about the bios tho..yeah, he should update.

I'll try checking my settings when I get home tonight after work.

And then my next question is how do I update the Bios. It's still the same Bios since I got it in May.

I'm fairly computer savvy, so is it a basic file install from Windows or Dell's site?

Ok, so I found the Bios update on Dell's site for my latop. I installed it and updated the Bios. Then I attempted to put the notebook into Standby mode to test it out... Nope, same thing, less than five seconds after it goes into Standby, it comes right back on, without me touching anything.

Can anyone help? Until I fix it, whenever I leave the house for more than a few hours I'll just shut it off. Oh well for now.

You might have recently installed a faulty driver OR buggy software in your lappy. This is also possible what you are connected to an "always on" internet and someone is intruding ito your system. Check for system spyware/malware/virus/trojan.

Have you done a fresh install since May?

try hibernate...it takes only 5 more seconds to boot up the pc. just saves all info onto HD. i dont like standby. when i leave the house, i hit the power button and it hibernates. quick easy, and dont need to reboot.

this may be a solution that doesnt fix the issue, but fixes your problem.!

and by the way "wake on USB" is a bios setting. thats what i was telling him to turn off....even though the Software (xp pro) doesnt have the option, there may be a conflict.

A fresh install of Windows? No. It's how it was when I got it. I just cleaned all the dell crap off. I was hesitant about doing a reformat when I got it even though alot of people on here do it. I'm worried about losing all of the proper settings for the laptop like drivers and necessary software and then being screwed. That might screw my warranty, right? I don't want to reformat and then have something not work on the laptop because it's not the proper dell setting or driver or software, etc.

I have Zone Alarm running all the time and Ad-Aware and run that once in a while. I used to always run anti-virus software on my previous desktop but I haven't on this because it hogs resources and I've already tried it with Norton. I can't stand the hogging resources that Anti-virus software does when it runs. Are there any alternatives to run a laptop and have it secure without making it run slow as a snail?

I reccomend Hibernation as well in most cases Hibernationis much more useful IMO since it actually turns the notebook off with the save state in place as opposed to stand why which leaves the notebook on in a minmal state.

Ok, I'll try hibernation. I did see it requires 1GB, damn! That kinda stinks, oh well. Also I think tomorrow morning when I power on my 6000 I'll check the Bios settings and Setup menu when it boots. I want to make sure all the settings are as they should be. This has stumped me as I haven't changed anything significant on my notebook recently, so I don't know why it just started doing this.

Thanks for all your help everyone, I'll keep you posted.

Ok, this is getting weird. I updated the BIOS to A09, then when I just booted up, I hit F2 and went into Setup. I found a setting called "USB Wake Support". The description sounded similar to what my problem is, and it was Enabled, so I turned it off, saved and exited. It rebooted, once windows came up, I tried going into Standby, hoping this would work...but no!! Damnit!

I haven't tried hiberation by the way, I'll try it once maybe, but it kinda sucks that it takes a whole gig off the HD.

Ok, check this out, I shut down all programs, shut off my wi-fi, which is all I've normally been doing... but then before I attempted to "Standby", I went and shutdown ZoneAlarm and unplugged all my USB devices from the ports. Then I attempted to go into standby....AND IT WORKED!! It stayed in Standby mode!!! Holycrap~!

So I guess this means I have to shutdown ZoneAlarm and unplug all of my USB devices before Standby. Bummer, but that's not alot.

hibernate takes whatever amount of ram you have..why? becuase you are actually making a copy of everything thats in the ram, and storing it on the HD.

hibernate is much better than standby. and it doesnt use power!

what is the point in doing all of that when you can just hibernate?

that seems like a lot more work for the same result
i like hitting hibernate better than unpluggin all my crap.

Well cause Hibernate takes up 1GB, and seems like it slows down the computer, no? Maybe I'll try it sometime.

Hibernation will NOT slow your lappy down unless you have been using hibernation for quite some time (weeks maybe) without rebooting once in a while. Hibernation being the cause of a slow down is true to older computers with less memory (RAM & ROM).

If Zonealarm is the culprit, use Sygate Personal Firewall PRO - more security, power and uses less resources.
Hibernation will not cause a performance issue. Hiberantion takes a "snap shot" of your memory in its current state so unless you had something running thats time dependant then you should not recivece any sort of performance issues even if you had the system off for a month.

Hey check this out, they have discontinued all Sygate Personal Firewall products...

ooh this is a surprise. better search for firewall reviews other than zonealarm if you can't stick with it.
