Windows 2000/xp Freezes At "windows Is Starting" Install Screen

I've had this problem on an older model, too. When I try to install Windows 2000 or XP pro, it goes all the way through the loading of files until it says "windows (xp/2000) is now starting", after which it just freezes. I left it for about two hours, it's definitely locked up. I've installed 98 and ME at seperate times, never had any problems. Does anyone know why this is happening? I've heard rumor about improper bios settings concerning mass storage controllers, but I copied the files to the hard drive to install from there and I get the same problem. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Are you using the same CD to copy to the HD? Are you installing it with typical settings or custom?

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode? Does it work then? Here are some ways to do it:

Freezing OS

I can't even get the OS to install; it's right after you load the files for the first time when you're installing that it freezes. It loads all the SCSI drivers and whatnot, but as soon as you get that message that windows is about to start that's when it STOPS. Sager says it's a bios issue, but I can't find the freakin' bios to save my life! Thanks for the advice, I'll just keep on trying.

Hmm... Well, I was going to suggest you copy to the hard drive first, but you did that... Did you leave the cd in the drive when it rebooted after copying the files? If it's a bootable cd, it will try and boot from the cd again rather than continuing the installation... I've had that happen a few times.

You get to the bios by hitting some keys right as you turn on the computer... it'll say what keys at the bottom as it's booting (press blah blah blah to enter setup)...

Best of luck to you!

I think I remember with Windows 2000 something similar might have happened to me. I had issues with both ACPI (power management) and with some SCSI drivers. In any case, whenever you are installing the OS, while you are in the initial blue screen, there should be some instructions on the very bottom and to the leftmost, about how to disable them. You might want to try doing this and see if it works then. I think I recall one of the things to do was to press Shift, or F7 or Shift-F7 or something like that.

Cheers.
