I just want to know what you guys thought about the screen quality of the 9300. What do you like about it? What do you not like about it if anything?

17" WUXGA LG Glossy Widescreen .. What is there NOT to be impressed by!
Defects, that's what could be not impressed by, if you ask this kinda question, people who got good screens will always praise, and people who got bad ones will always complain, based on what I've heard in this forum, there are quite a lot defects being reported here all the time. however there are cases when people got too picky and complain about good screens, or the other way around when some people are too sloppy to notice defects on their screens. One thing is true though, Dell's screens can beat sony X-brite, if you have seen one of those in sony stores, expect your 9300 to be a bit under that

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, so please be patient with me. Recently, I found a fantastic deal for 9300. The only problem is that some people said that bigger screen breaks easily so my dad won't let me buy it. Basically, I was told that not a lot of notebooks use such big screen and its still in early development stage. It sounds unreasonable to me but I just couldn't get it without convincing my dad that this isn't true. So, would anyone be kind enough to help me to come up with some strong reason and proofs? It's just such a great laptop and the deal won't last very long. Thank you very much.

Regards,
Patrick

edit: By the way, I can't use the search function of this forum for some reason. After I click "search", the screen just goes blank.

Is it your money, or your dad's?

Anyway, take your dad to any technology store.

Say, "Hey dad! Look! All of the TVs here are widescreen. In fact, I can't find a dinky square monitor in the place. I'd say that this widescreen technology has arrived!

"Wow. look how sturdy they are. Probably, they are durable and don't break so easy (like some people say) ....

"Gee, I wonder if any computer company.... like..... let's say the largest, most successful PC manufacturer in the world--Dell--could figger out a good way to put a widescreen on a laptop?

"I'll just bet that Dell could do it, pops! Whaddayathink, huh?"

"Breaks easily"? Uh, yeah.... sure. Just who are these people and why would your father listen to them instead of you?

Anyhow, I hope that you get your i9300. I got one and it sure is sweet!

If i hadn't been reading this damn forum I would have liked my screen alot more, not saying I dislike it, but i notice alot of stuff I might have missed otherwise.

odious_m, thanks!!! Money doesn't really matter now because that the deal saves me at least $680. If it's alright, can you also named some 17" screen laptops besides 9300. Some other strong reasons will also help me to convince my dad. My dad is kind of stubborn. To honest, I think he came up with the theory himself.

Regards,
patrick

The screen is pretty good. I have the WXGA/1440x900. I bought mine for two reasons, 1900x1200 is to small on a 17inch and I am not going to make my fonts and icons bigger.....and when playing games you will better FPS at a lower res.

That said the refresh is not the best at 25ms I see ghosting. When at my desk its plugged into my Samy 940B which has a 8ms refresh and is considerbly brighter.

laptop screen

pulled from a i9300 review for the kid looking to prove his dad wrong...
note the item in bold. This is a very good thing - that keeps the notebook solid with such a screen. - need more info on this google "dell's use magnesium alloy".

Quote:
It has a very pleasing appearance, silver trimmed with white and seems solid and rugged, probably due to the weight, about 3.6kg. I found out later on that it`s based upon a magnesium alloy chassis, but I won`t take it apart to have a look!
If he is not satisfied your best bet is to get a 3 year on site warranty (worth its weight in gold) and then add 3 year CompleteCare for the 119 or whatever. skimp on the ram or something and add more later but dont buy it without complete care and if your screen breaks Dell will replace the screen or send you a new laptop.

Refer here for more info on CompleteCare.
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topi...=us&l=en&s=gen

this screen wouldn't really be any easier to break then a 15.4" on the i6000. atleast not by much - Notebooks are expensive and if your anything like me - something I spend over $2000 on I take care of as if it was my long lost child (perhaps a little extreme). Even if were just talking about something around $1k it still something worth taking care of. Get CompleteCare and you dont have to worry about it so much.

HP, Fujitsu, Sony, Sager, Gateway, Toshiba, Acer, Alienware, Asus--Dell of course--all offer 17" screen laptops. I think that IBM may be the only major brand without a 17" available.

I guess your dad is a little behind the times.... Good luck!
