Kubuntu won't let me get Administrator access!!

Well i just installed Kubuntu after wrestling with gentoo for a few weeks. I have to say that KDE 3.5 looks better than ever. I have one very annoying problem however. I noticed that my internet did not work immediately. I opened the system configurer, and went to the internet connections part. It recognized both my ethernet and wireless immediately, but both were listed as disabled. It told me to get Administrator access to modify them. I pushed the Administrator Access button, typed my password, and.......nothing happened. It still told me to get admin access. My password is right, when i tested that with a wrong password it told me, so i know the password is right. I cant figure out how to get sudo access to that window from the console, and we all know there is no root user in Ubuntu distros. how the hell do i tell it to stop being stupid and let me work on it?

its a known kubuntu bug. I rebooted and it was fine for me , another time i had to completeley reinstall.. try doing updates.

And for networking being disabled. make sure they are not disabled in windows (windows shuts off my wireless in the bios, not just the driver.)

1) i figured out how to get around the kde bug, just do "kdesu systemsettings" and it will bring up system settings with root access to everything.

2) how do i make sure that windows doesnt turn them off? sounds like a pretty shady thing to do.

3) I got in, but when i enabled them, they stayed green for half a second and went red again. i configured both of them with the right gateway, tried dhcp and a static IP, nothing. I also noticed that my /etc/resolve.conf is completely empty. shouldnt i have some DNS's in there or something? Kubuntu is supposed to be the one that "just works."

"kubuntu" has many bugs in reletivity to "ubuntu" which "just works"

Kubuntu = UbuntuBugs^2

yeah, im not a large fan of gnome either, i prefer KDE. im probably just gonna get fluxbox and enlightenment anyway once i get the internet to work.

but back to my question, how do i know windows isnt disabling internet in the bios when i shut down windows?

try installing ubuntu and installing kde from there. in my experiance its a lot less buggy that way.

if i do that, will all the configurers (kcontrol, kwrite, etc) conflict with the gnome apps? specifically would kwifi be a problem?

i got the internet to work once by manually editing /etc/network.interfaces, and it worked, until the next reboot, when it stopped again

I installed from ubuntu, installed KDE, and there are not conflicts with settings, one changes the other. And if you cant change a setting in KDE (buggy still ) than hit alt F2 and run "gnome-panel" (if you have gnome installed) and it will run the gnome panel, and change the settings from there. Once you are done and things are working, bring up a terminal or konsole and type in "killall gnome-panel"

try suse or pc linux os. both are really nice KDE distros.

there will be a much larger focus on kubuntu in the future and the next release, dapper drake, should be as good as ubuntu in terms of bugs.
hum, dapper drake is only like four months away isnt it? what the hell, i might just use suse until then, or, *gasp* ubuntu. But i have found kubuntu to be .... ish.

ugh, Suse 10.0 is a nasty install though, that baby is huge. i hate this.
what do you have against gnome?

gnome > kde
well, nothing. To tell you the truth, i just got used to KDE. But, i made my decision i will go with ubuntu. I wouldnt be able to stand the install for suse10.0. So goodbye kubuntu, for now. Plus i would like some free ram, not being devoured by kde. Hell, ill do it now, have nothing better to do. Already have iso cd.

btw i found a fix for that thing, you simply run kdesu systemsettings, and it brings up the system settings window with admin access to everything. still its annoying, and im thinkin of trying ubuntu, i just really like the kde GUI, i don't like the apple type layout
post #16 of 16
yea, i saw the kdesu systemsettings, but there is also the kmilo issue, when i pop up dmesg a ton of lcd error due to kmilo and my asus lcd buttons and what not. I fixed it once, but it came up again, plus other things. So installed ubuntu already, just gotta get it to work the way i want it.
