Ok so I just went down to this computer shop, and this guy was trying to sell me a laptop.. he said it was an Asus "VintegeLaptop" This one looked nice, I'll give it that...

17" widscreen monitor, looked crisp, not sure I caught the Rez though..
80gig 7200rpm HD
512MB Memory, I'll have to ask if thats one stick or 2...
CDRW/DVD
2 USB Ports
Wireless Modem
Moble Processor, I think he said 1.86

for 1,250

Then he said he had an "Asus 576" that had a 15.5 Monitor, 40Gig 7200RPM HD, ATI X700, 256MB Mem (I can only hope thats one stick) USB, TV Out... all that stuff for

$749

Sounds like a good deal.. but I'd like to look em up a bit more..

anyone have any info?

I just tried to call him back and he kinda blew me off...

A notebook with an X700 for under $1000. Begin suspicious mode.

40 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. Suspicion level rising.

Asus 576 - never heard of it. Extremely suspicious.

15.5" monitor - 15.4", maybe. If he said 15.5", more suspicious.

256 MB memory standard on a notebook with a X700. No mention of the CPU.

I would recommend that you not purchase from this person, and possibly that you report him to the proper authorities.

I'm not sure about some of these, but I can tell you that 40 GB and 80 GB 7200 RPM drives were not out at any point where I was looking at notebooks. The rest is suspicious primarily because of the price and a few feature mismatches.

I concur with Yuri. Also you need to get the facts straight your self. Firs tyou say 17" (which is obsurd becuase there are no 17" vintage models from asus). How can it be vintage if it has an x700 in it? Sound like someone is confused.

All you have to do is look on the back and write down the model number. There is nothing else you need to ask.

try to get his name (real), phone number and address. call him and verify the phone # and address.

if it was a local deal then you can find him no problem. but if it is over a long distance, i'd give up on it as the above posts tell you, it is really suspicious.

Given the specs, it sounds like an Asus A6Va.
However, that model number is just weird...

None of the ASUS ensemble notebooks come with 7200RPM hard drives.

The shop is litteraly 5 minutes from my home, Just down the street and around the corner.

I have to say the Model he called the "Vinege" looked and felt pretty nice, the screen was clear and the build SEEMED sturdy, Put on Spiderman 2, movie played nicely...

I'll go back today and bring my camera, if he's legit he shouldn't have a problem taking photos...

I'll try to get more specs too...
