z63a heat problem

How bad is it?? I've been hearing so much from both sides its hard to decide. Personally, i don't care about the heat (as long as its not STEAMING hot) and it will always be on the desk. What im worried about is hearing people complaing about how the heat ruined their hard drive. Im worried because on the z63a that i want to get, especially with the spec on the one that i want to get. any insights?

The heat complaints are blown way out of proportion. Yes, there's heat on the right palmrest...but that's only because it's warm in comparison to the left one; the left palm rest has no heat at all. The right one is moderately warm.
If it bothers you that much...just type withOUT resting your wrist in the notebook - it's probably much more ergonomic to do that anyway.

what about the heat frying up the hard drive thing? please tell me thats just false information. its bascailly preventing me from buying the laptop right now.

Also, what do you guys think, at the same prce:

2gb ram/2ghz/80gb 7200rpm

OR

1gb ram/2ghz/60gb 5400rpm/upgraded sound card

i personally wouldnt be needing that much ram, but just that deal makes it look like i get so much more with the same price.

I'd go with option 2.

Heat frying up the hard drive? I've never even heard of that. It doesn't get THAT hot... keep in mind Hitachi drives run hotter than other brands (i.e Seagate...so get Seagate if you can)

umm deffinately go with option 1, sound isnt that important.

The palm rest definitely gets hotter than all the other ASUS models. However, the heat will not fry your hard drive. As for your 2 options, option 1 seems like the better choice. I prefer better performance.

Have you heard the Z63a speakers? They're horrible... and it's not much better when you plug in external speakers.

The 7200RPM hard drive isn't the best option, in my opinion, for small chasses like the Z63a. 5400 RPM is fast enough...and more RAM can be acquired later on. No one needs 2GB right now...

Excellent suggestion. I wouldn't recommend a 7200rpm drive for such a small unit either. 5400 rpm drives perform very well. There's not much of a performance difference between the 5400 to the 7200, as there is between the 4200 & 5400. Just like there isn't much of a difference between 1gb RAM to 2gb, as there is from 256mb to 1gb. If you work with graphic intensive files or heavy computing like conversions, ripping or rendering, I would recommend the 7200rpm and/or 2gb jump. Many users don't use the Z63a for those reasons. And yes extra RAM can be acquired anytime and it's easy to install.

Counting how many of these things we sold is imposible. Its our second best popular model right next to the z70va. To this day from the time it was released we had one broken drive out of couple hundreds z63s sold. Why do these threads resurface? Someone please make sticky that says "z63a harddrives work as they should and do not break from the heat atleast no evidence has been presented that shows otherwise". And if you are really worried about this just get a WD scorpio or samsung spinpoint and poof the so called heat problem is gone.

Oh yes but who can assemble that for me Anyway, how hot does it actually get? Because really, i wouldn't mind if its warm, just as long as its tolerable, not STEAMING hot.

oh by the way, being a newb and all, how much difference between 1.86ghz and 2.0ghz. My comp runs at 2.13 so i realy dont know how well the lower one runs at.

What's wrong with going with the 7200RPM? You say its not a great improvement over the 5400, but is there actually something bad about it?

The heat source is prorbably from the harddrive. it's the same for my old asus laptop as well as my ibook. the harddrive does get significantly hotter under normal conditions whereas the CPU only heats up moderately during activity.

to put in a 7200rpm in a laptop that's known for its heat production in the harddrive area is just asking for trouble beucase it produces more heat than 5400.

option 1 definately sounds like a good deal if the two options are the same price. But if option 2 is cheaper, definately go for it because i don't see 2GIGs of ram will do any good. the 20gig harddrive would be useful if you use it to download (no recommended beucase you're running 7200 and you'll probrably run it 24/7 to get the downloads done. so heat + more heat = death).

Ya, I'm gonna go with neither.

2gb of RAM isn't worth the money, and the 7200RPM drive isn't a good idea for any laptop smaller than 15.4" due to producing more heat than a 5400RPM drive.

My choice for a Z63A would be 1gb of RAM, 2ghz processor, 80gb or 100gb 5400RPM hard drive, and the upgraded sound card if and only if you have the extra money. I would go for a bigger 5400RPM hard drive over the sound card, as that's going to make a significant performance difference and give you more storage. The upgraded sound card normally isn't worth it at all, but with all the complaints about the Z63A's speakers and onboard sound, it sounds it might be worth the extra money.
