Dell or Compaq

Trying to decide between a Compaq nc6000 and Dell Inspiron 8600? Any opinions appreciated.

I'm after one of these two because they both support DVI pass thru at 1600 X 1200 resolution.

If I go with the Dell, I definitely want the Samsung LCD and not real sure how to ensure I get it... any ideas. I only want the WSXGA resolution on the Dell because the highest resolution is just to small.

Thanks for your opinion... any particular reason why you'd suggest the Dell?

I recently read some articles about HP/Compaq and they are having nothing but problems. Problems with hardware and tech support and other things. One article is in Decembers PC World. Dell doesn't really have good tech support either but thats mostly cause they don't speak really good english in India.

Sounds like they are contracted through Alienware

Alienware is no better, I would look into several other companies, if a high end system like a Voodoo is to much money then go check out the Gateways.

I ordered a Gateway lap top and it comes with even more features that I need then the Alienware did.

In fact for 700 dollars less I even get the DVD R/RW & CD R/RW as well as a six in one memory card reader, which I need for compact flash cards.

Alienware does not offer a compact flash card reader on their Area 51m.

All in all the Gateway is a far better deal with more features.

Dell has the best RMA and the 8600 is uber powerhouse at extremely competitive pricing

So if Dell's support is so bad, then why are they selling so many computers. It can't just be price???

To tell you the truth, IBM used to have great support, but I had to call them three times to find out if my T41p supported DVI pass thru at 1600 X 1200 resolution. Two of the three technicials were barely literate in my opinion. Sounded like they were in a foreign country too.

Man Sonic you really need to chill out. Almost every post you have has something with Alienware sucks in it b/c you didn't get your laptop. Plus how did Alienware come into a thread where a person only wants an opinion on a dell or hp. Sonic you really piss me off.

dells support was great a few years back when it was based in the u.s. then following the trend of every other company, they moved their call centers to india to save costs. then their support quality went down the toilet. i can readily testify to that.
however now they have moved their corporate support back to the u.s due to heavy complaints. as have some other companies too. i hope they soon move the rest of the support for individual users back here too.

I had a nc6000 and it was pretty sweet. I liked it alot but opted to go for the nc8000 in order to get 128mb ram on the 9600.

I have no experience with the Dell you mentioned.

Late last night I decided that I would go for a Dell Inspiron 8600 so this morning I got online and configured the one that I wanted. I printed it out and took it to Panera's so I could order it from a warm body and maybe try and push the price down and the delivery up. I called from Panera's and after navigating through their maze of phone options, I was placed on hold while waiting for a sales person.

Fifteen minutes later I said to myself that if it takes this long to get somebody on the phone to take my money WTF am I doing ordering a Dell. Hung up and got to the office and called PC Connection and ordered a Compaq nc8000. Three options on the phone and I was immediately connected to a sales person and 3 minutes later it was ordered and scheduled for delivery on Monday.

BTW, PC Connection can take your order until 2:00 a.m. and still deliver NEXT day! They share runway space with FedEX so they have a special arrangement.

Now that's what I call service. Dell... can you NOT hear me now???

just like many here, i was on the border line between dell 8600 and HP nc8000... i needed international warranty, so decided to call and asked about some of the details listed on their websites...

phoned dell.. after their maze of touch tone options and being put on hold for a while, got trough to a customer support representative... the girl told me that she cannot give me any useful information, but will put me trough to someone who can.... after being put on hold for another ten minutes.. i was told that i dont have some *magic* customer service number and that they cannot answer my questions about the warranty (why!!??)... i was however given a number to phone... - it was the same one i dialed in the first place...

i then phoned hp... got through to someone right away... the did not know all the answers in regards to the service at a place where im temporarily moving to, but phoned the customer support ppl there (with me still on the line).. they both went trough every concern i had.. even went as far as getting me phone numbers and addresses of close by service depots...

i understand that this situation could have easily be reversed... maybe i got trough to some unknowledgeable ppl at dell and hence the mix-ups.. but still ended up going with nc8000.. so far its been a very pleasant experience...
