MR9600PT Crashing

Sparing all of the unnecessary details, my Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo seems to be crashing for no apparent reason.

Its the dell version of the card. With stock speeds of 337.50 Core /243.00 RAM.

I've overclocked the card in many different ways. The card itself plays stable with no artifacts almost up to 380/280. I've also done the GPU Cooling Mod, so my temps rarely, if ever, go above 75C.

The only problem I'm having is after about 2 hours of gameplay, the card freezes, screen goes black, then scrambled, then VPU Recover kicks in and the game comes back on. The temp is still around 75C when this happens. There are no symptoms of overheating showing in the game prior to crashing either. It also seems that this problem occurs regardless of the amount of overclocking applied.

Really, the only possible solution i could come up with is that my Copper Plate for the GPU is slightly too thick and is causing expansion problems when it gets hot. However, were this the case, I would imagine the card would freeze soon after boot up, and definitely soon after the start of a 3D intensive game. So after ruling out that idea (although, by a stretch, its still a possibility) I'm leaft dumbfounded.

Any ideas?

Your card could just be bad. Dell does let things like video card quality slip especially early before the whole XPS gaming machines came into fruition. Assuming you still have warranty why not ask dell to have yours replaced?

Is there any specific game it crashes in?

Any 3D intensive game. WoW, UT2004, AA, CS, and Ragnarok Online are the only games I have on my system. The only one that it doesnt crash while playing is Ragnarok. However, I haven't played Ragnarok in months, so its possible it may even crash in it if I play it for about 2 hours. It usually crashes at or around the 2 hour mark.

It's so weird because when it crashes, VPU recover kicks in and it comes right back up as peppy as it was when I first launched the game. The whole freeze/crash/recover scenario usually takes about 30 seconds. After that it'll play for about another 2 hours before crashing.

hmm well based on what you describe the problem feels an awful lot like overheating. This was one of the major reasons i swapped my 8600 for a 9100 so at the time before I made the switch i ran the laptops GPU in battery Mix mode which clocks down the card considerably but the crashing went away obviously due to the lack of high heat output the card produced.
