Locking up and freezing (not heat related)

Hey guys I have a Sager 9860 and I love it, but in the last two days it has started to just lock up in windows. Under normal use, first it was only when I was using firefox. I rebooted and got chkdsk saying stuff was corrupted etc.

Sometimes when the laptop booted the DJ would not light up and the screen would not turn on, so multiple hard reboots were the way to get it back up.

So I backed up all that I wanted and threw my 9in1 windows DVD in to do a reformat. When i get to selecting partions it says warning unknown disk, no disk detected....

Soooo do you think it is Harddrive related? I have 9 months left on my warrenty, BUT in 5 weeks I am going to be in Thailand until November, so I don't want to risk having to ship the laptop over to me.

I mean I guess I could just get a larger HDD and see how that goes, I have a 55gig. Question though, do I void my warrenty by replacing the HDD myself?

thanks guys.

I’ve had some of the same problems with my 9880. I haven’t figured it out yet, but I’ve gone from blaming the problem on heat to poor electrical design.

The same model Alienware (Alienware Area-51m 7700) users experience very similar problems, so It’s an across the board problem with this machine.

But this by no means eliminates nvida or Microsoft either…as lately I’ve been able to discover repeatable patterns that cause the screen to turn off while the machine continues to run. Sort of as if the machine is in a quasi-Standby-state.

This can be easily recreated inside of MS Office by simply navigating through the menus…which would, in my opinion; point to MS ambition to force feed their .net framework down our throats.

Before (when I first expeienced this problem) after the screen turned off…the machine would also reboot. The rebooting has subsided since I removed the .net framework and corresponding service pack. Now the screen just turns off while the machine continues to run.

This will be a tough one to figure out, but it appears this problem is more predominate with 32 bit XP with SP2 enabled. It is probably nothing to do with the machine design (electronics or heat) and more to do with Microsoft, Intel and nvida collectively with 915G chipset.

Anyway, I wouldn’t waste your time and money replacing the HD. Again, just my opinion.

Well I ordered a new 7200 80 gig. I was having sooo much trouble and freezing in dos promt etc. So it was not just windows. I figure it's worth a shot and 20 gigs more, I will send out the HDD to be repaired and then get a usb external hook up for that one.

woot it was just driver errors and issues dealing with firefox, no need for repairs yay, but the extra 20 gigs is nice and I COULD run em both
