Dells 30 Inch LCD screen the 3007FP - Page 2

I'm not sure how you can tell. The apple powerbooks 15 and 17inch ones supposedly can power the apple cinema 30inch and they have 9700 cards. So I don't think it is really a power card issue as most of us have that or greater in our laptops.

Nope, I don't believe any of the X850s used dual link DVI.

Have a look here for a bit more information on dual link DVI and DVI in general:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual-link_DVI

If you look on the right hand side, you can see the different DVI connectors - the dual link DVI outputs have a different connector.

Ati is partial to the DVI-I standard for there older x8x0 series however the Dell 24inch screen comes with an VGA adapter so I imagine those who bought this screen would get some sort of DVI I - DVI D adapter
post #24 of 70
If you're running an X8xx card, you won't be using this display - you need dual link DVI which I don't think any of the X8xx cards had. A DVI-D cable plugs straight into a DVI-I port, no adapter is needed, if you want to run analogue off this type of port you need an adapter.

Based on the prices for the 2005 and 2405, I'd guess around $2000 before coupons.

I'm definitely waiting for some coupons, does anyone buy stuff from Dell at full price?

It'll probably be a few months before we see any coupons, too.

You're getting close to projector prices at 2 grand. I picked up a 720p DLP projector for $2500 last August and now have a 110" monitor and big screen HDTV all in one. If you've got the space for one, screw 30"...go for 8' wide

From your sig I see you have a 360. I should have one soon. I prob sell it So you have it hooked up to your monitor...no HDTV?

Benq makes the best? My brother is thinking about buying a projector for his basement. I have a 57in HDTV. I am more interested in a 19/20" laptop than a 30" LCD.

Ehhh, not the "best". Its all relative. There are projectors for tens or thousands of dollars that would blow away any BenQ, obviously. For my price range and, more importantly, for the space and setup I have, the PE7700 from BenQ was a perfect fit. Some projectors are brighter than others (better for areas with more ambient light) and some have better blacks but more dim (better for basements with no windows). Each projector has its own throw range that determines if it will fit in your room as well. As far as BenQ goes, top notch support here in the US (bad in Europe from what I read) and the picture quality will blow you away.

For $2500, I probably would have had a 50" or less DLP big screen TV set. If you have the wall space and have a place to ceiling mount one, a projector is by far the best way to go. Everyone who watches Colts games or any HD on my 8 foot wide screen kicks themselves for getting a TV set.

The only downside is the need to replace the bulb in the projector every ~3000 hours of use at ~$350 a pop. However, if you do the math, that means you could leave it on for more than 8 hours a day, every day for a year before you'd need to replace one bulb. Thats the downside and also that standard definition TV and even standard DVDs just aren't made to be blown up to 110". It really requires HDTV, a home-theater PC or some other sort of high resolution signal to show off what it can do. Once HD DVDs are released, movies will look better at home than at the theater.

I've sold several of them, my 360 was paid off long ago

The 2405FPW has component inputs, it's set to 720p. I could run 1080i but it doesn't look as good. With a resolution of 1920x1200, the 2405FPW can support the highest of HD resolutions - 1080p.

The Dell 30" should MSRP for around $1800 since the Apple goes for $2500. Samsung is about to release the LTM270M1 panel, which is 27" w/ 8ms GtoG, 1000:1 contrast, 500 nits, & 1920x1200. The new Dell 2407 will probably get the LTM240M2 panel, which is a beefed-up version of the 2405's panel. I believe the Dell 30" will depart from the Samsung panels and use the LG-Philips panel since the specs pretty-much match the 30" LG offering.

Apple has a long-standing relationship with LG-Philips and this is who makes the glass for Apple. The Samsung panels look better ( on paper ) than the LG-Philips offerings. It is possible that Dell will switch the 30" to Samsung panels ( since the on-paper specs are better ) when they become available and there may be a 27" offering sometime after the 2nd quarter of '06.

IMHO. The 30" would not be a very good gaming monitor since the high native resolution will push even the mighty 7800GTX 512's to the limit. You will probably have to have an SLI setup and games that take advantage of SLI. ATi's x1800xt will probably have difficulty producing playable results at 2560x1600.

I have the Dell 24" and this seems to be the perfect size for most setups. I say that because the normal viewing distance between monitor and viewer is about 24" and anything larger would be too "busy" and maybe even uncomfortable. With the 30" you would have to VESA-mount the LCD on a wall behind keyboard and mouse in order to get a perfect field-of-view.

If I had the 30", I could see myself playing games at 1920x1200 using the 1:1 pixel ratio ( black pillars and letterbox ) and using the full real estate for surfing the 'net and/or viewing TV/DVDs.

I agree with you about the gaming, I was going to say you could play it at 1920x1200 centred - the monitor is so large you wouldn't be losing out in that area to the 24 inch monitor.

yeah but the main problems is how few 3d games/programs there are that actually support resolutions over 2048 pixels in windows, I know there are lots of programs you can't run at that res; however, you can run almost anything at that res in linux.

The point was you wouldn't have to run games at the native resolution, you could ru a centred WUXGA resolution.
