Is there ANY benifit to keeping Quickset?

From what I can see, Dell Quickset is simply a "skinned-fer-idiots" conjoining of a wifi switch and the Windows Power Options settings.

Is there some hidden gem in here that should be cause not to kill it?

if you have an XPS2/M170 you can control the lights with it and I believe the Winamp lightshow plugin needs Quickset running to work. It doesn't really use any resources so there's no benefit to getting rid of it either. Up to you.

I like it. Switches to presentation mode and back nicely, a bit more control over my power and scree brightness selection options. Lots of stuff centrally located.

No need for it I guess, but I don't mind keeping it running.

I dont use it, but thats just me. If you need an option(s), keep it, if not, disable that sucker

Nope, they work...

Buttons work fine without it, and they're great when you play guitar. Learning an intro and having to click "play" with the mouse and pick up your pick in the .5sec before the song starts was a little difficult at times .

I don't use it. Can control volume and brightness fine with Fn+ without it QS loaded. Don't need to jack with the lights, can always do it in Bios. I use Centrino hardware Control for cpu speed. So you really don't need it. I'm guessing it's an extra process that can be shut down.

Same here.
That's the best feature and I use it regulary to see the level of screen brightness and (most of all) the volume level.
Qualar's advanced LED app needs it running or at least installed, too.

Dumped the quickset software a while back in favor of Microsoft's IntelliType app.

Using IntelliType, a readback is displayed while adjusting volume up/down and mute using the media control buttons. This small readback will disappear just as quick as it appeared once your done pressing the keys.

Also, the Intellitype software lets you edit how each media button behaves when pressed to launch a specific app or command.

Quickset is just a shortcut to various power options, so it's a completely passive background process (it doesn't use any CPU time). Ending the process will save you a whole 4,920KB, but nothing more. I like having quick access to my XPS lights once a month if I change them.

Well, the issue at the root of my question wasn't an effort to save CPU or RAM resources. It was in an effort to reduce the number of programs that want to ccontrol my wifi and power settings.
-I was trying (and still am) to resolve an issue with my Atheros card.

Was forwarded here from another thread I made. A couple of questions for you.

1 - I am using a dell keyboard. it has 5 buttons on the top left that control forward, back, stop, reload and home for the internet. On the right there are 3 buttons, volume up, volume down, mute.

2 - I installed the intellitype software. I get the volume up/down indicator however it does not look as nice as the one that is in your screen shot. What am I missing? Mine looks like a bland green LED bar. Looks chitty to me. See Attachment Below.

3 - After installing intellitype, the mut button on the keyboard no longer works. I checked to see if there was something to configure but there isn't.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I use it to bump up the size of my icons and fonts in windoze explorer. Is there another program that will do this?

I'm using the IntelliType v5.3 from the link above. Could be that you may be using an earlier version is why the on-screen volume control looks different.

Also, I'm not using an external keyboard. I installed the software just to control the media buttons found on the front of the I9300/M170 and it works great for that!

Let me try that and see what happens. Thanks somms. I did not see the link previously and just did a search for it on google.
