where to buy Asus z71v?

Hey ppl,

I am about to buy my asus z71v soon. But I am confused about which store to buy it from.

I am in Canada and here are the stores I have selected for the same specs.

1.86g pentium M
60gb 5400 HDD
512mb Ram
dvd/cdrw combo
free carrying case

1. pccom.ca has it for $1439.CAD (NO SATA)
2. lucomputers.com has it for $1457.CAD (with SATA) $1449.CAD(w/o SATA)
3. etccomputers.ca has it for $1459.CAD(with SATA) $1451.CAD(W/o SATA)
4. canadasys.com has it for $1454.CAD (NO SATA)

But Canada has 15% Tax to be payed on top. I can also get it from Michigan US. The resellers I am looking to are

1. www.geared2play.com $1316.US (with SATA)$1336.US(W/O SATA)
2. www.rjtech.com $1309.US(with SATA) $1309.US(W/o SATA)

IS SATA an good investment? What is SATA?
and
where do you suggest should I buy it from?

I am waiting for this laptop impatiently.

SATA means the hard drive runs on a Serial ATA interface. due to the way the hard drive connects to the notebook, it's really not going to help you any over a standard ATA hard drive.

Regarding where to buy it, it's your choice. CanadaSys has been recommended in Canada, and PROPortable, ISTNC, Geared2Play, & c9tech have been recommended in the US by forumgoers.

Only if you go there to pick up and you claim you have no purchase on this trip at the boarder ( if you dare to ) you might avoid that, otherwise you still have to pay, you might even be charged the Custom clearance service fee as well ( if you have it shipped to you, usually $50 - 60 ).

I am not trying to save money on taxes but just wanted to know which is the best place to buy z71v at good prices. Thanks for the help

Secondly does the Nvidia 6600 in z71v perform equally well when overclocked to ati x700 clock speeds of the z70va?
Yes, when overclocked, but the heatsink is poorly designed so you probably won't be able to get it to the same as the x700 with the stock heatsink.

Btw, I remember someone saying that if you burn a cd from the HD if its ATA, it's slower. Is it same with SATA?

I got mine from here http://www.adamant.com/ good service, great price and got fast.
i believe that canadasys will beat competitors prices... Anyhow, i highly recommend them, great bunch of people, plus they throw in lots of free stuff! (if your hurry up you get a free notebook sleeve, they may still be giving away USB keys too)

ok then does that mean that the z70va is a better buy than z71v?

I am not a gamer exactly so I dont think I will be using the x700's potentiel.

what I have gathered until now is this.

z71v

Ambient light sensor( dunno if it is that important)
SATA hard drive
Low price
Nvidia gpu (I have an ati(see sig) and I am not a gamer so may buy nvidia)
runs cooler
runs silent
z71v stereo Speakers have better sound than the z70va with 4 speakers

z71va

carbon fiber body
x700 gpu
4 speakers may give louder sound
better screen
bluetooth

I am tight on budget but will buy what is best.

Have you ever visited resellerratings?
If you live in Vancouver, I can recommend some good local places to you.
Otherwise, get it from CanadaSys.

I guess if you're really on a budget, stick with the Z71v. However, the Z70Va is still a superior system... made out of better materials.
They're both very similar systems as far as target user. I think you've got the basic advantages of each down. For a more detailed comparison, check out this thread over at Notebook Review: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=30680

I guess Z71v still have the battery problem. Get the Z71a for non-gamer with tight budget.

Canadasys is recommended if you are in Ontario.

We're not sure if Z71v units are still shipping with bad batteries or not. We know that at least some (not sure the percentage) of the Z71v units shipped between April and August had bad batteries that needed to be replaced. Asus has been replacing the batteries as needed, and their replacements (except for 4 or so) have been good and fixed the problem (and the replacements for those 4 worked fine as well). No users who have bought one since September have reported any battery issues, but we cannot be absolutely sure they're gone until another month or so goes by, as the issue arises (if it arises at all) after 2-3 month's use.

ok as I am on a tight budget I am looking at getting barebones with a celeron CPU.

I am looking for a celeron M 380 Cpu 1.6ghz.

WIll the performance be ok? What is the battery life I can expect. The cpu is rated at 21W I guess.
I'd strongly advise saving for a Pentium M if you care about battery life. My Z71v with a Pentium M 1.86 Ghz processor (undervolted) & Seagate 5400 RPM hard drive gets around 3 hours 45 minutes battery life while surfing the net, word processing, etc. (and an average of six hours battery life with the modular battery added ) down to as low as 2 hours 15 minutes when gaming or playing DVDs. The performance on mine is fantastic: it handles everything I throw at it.

but what battery life do i expect from the celeron M ?????
I can live with atleast 2hours or more

and will it run cooler as it is just 21W???
I dont think you have to pay the pst if you are not from ontario and are buying from Canadasys. So that is 7% less to pay. Check with them first, but I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

you can probably get 2 hours with the Celeron. The reason the Pentium M gets better battery life is SpeedStep, a feature that allows the CPU to reduce its clock frequency and wattage used when it isn't needed and conversely ramp it back up when it is. 27 watts is the maximum power consumption of the Pentium M, but the minimum is considerably less (7 watts, if I recall correctly), so a Pentium M will have better battery life and require less power to do so.

As advised by others, you should go for the Pentium M for battery life and if you are on a very tight budget and you can wait, then goto eBay. Dothans with 1.5GHz, 1.6GHz will be less than US$100 and 1.73GHz will be around $100 if you are lucky!

ok 1 more question.

The audio dj thing that asus mentions in the list.

Are the buttons only for audio or does it also play movies and other stuff too?

I remember seeing "dvd dj capable" written at many places.

this function is very important to me. does any asus laptop has the function to support dvd's and movies when the os is off?
