If the buttons work for audio, of course they work for movies. (as long as you're using the same player, and its supported.... i use WMP for example)

About having support when its off... i have no idea... never tried it :S

Would be cool if it did though... does anyone know if it plays MP3 disks while off too?

The Z71v does NOT play DVDs outside the operating system. I'm not sure if any Asus models do, although it's a possibility with the W1 or W2 models. Regarding MP3 discs, I'm not sure, as I don't have any!
