Using sign on id for xp. anyone else have problems?

I first thought signing on as a different user was a cool idea. Both my wife and I had our own set up. A couple months down the road certain user information was not accessible without getting an error message. I could no longer get into my picture file that held 1000's of pictures of my kids vacations etc. In order to get things resolved I had to access my hard drive using a hacker program on another desktop. The problem was only resolved after wiping the hard drive reinstalling xp.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

ummmm. nope sorry. As a pet habit ive never put anything in standard folders like 'My Pictures' etc... I prefer to keep all that sort of stuff on my personal space anyway... Surely you could have logged in as admin in safe mode and opened up the access on the user names?

tried that and it didn't work, I had some serious gurus looking into it. The only thing I can think of that messed it up was that I installed professional over existing xp at one point

Yep. Never keep stuff in the default "user friendly" commodities provided by Windows like "My Pictures", "My Briefcase", "My Documents" and such, don't even keep your files on the desktop itself. If something happens to Windows (or you need to reinstall Windows) those are the first things to go.

To ensure file safety if you must have folders on the desktop always create a folder on the root directory (C:, D: or whatever) and create a shortcut to the folder and place it on your desktop.
