Laptop Suggestions/Opinions

I am in the market for a new laptop. It will mainly be used for class so I need portability. However, I don't know which one to go with. I will mainly be using it to type papers, powerpoints, internet, basic photoshop editing, and maybe some simple video editing - just incase a class requires it. There will be no gaming.

I guess I'll start by setting some limits. I do not want to spend more than $1500. I obviously want it to be thin and light.

For my situation, what do I really need? Right now my only concern is video memory. I see that most portable laptops come with 32 or 64mb video memory. What are the limits to a card this small? You have to understand, I'm not used to cards this low as I've always had highend comps for gaming.

I am really interested in the iBook or PowerBook but I've been using PCs all my life. I like the style, and also the size. Any reason to go with a Mac? Any reason not to? I know that Apple will be switching to intel chips next year so I'm definitely gonna keep my eye out for that. I plan on buying this laptop next year but I just want a general idea and narrow down my options. Thanks.

I think a chembook 2040 can be had within your range, it has a 14" screen and 128 meg dedicated x600. I'd check it out.

yeah, if you can, definitely hold out til january 10th to see what the new intel ibooks are gonna be like.

otherwise, have a look at the c series fujitsu (the pentium M ones, not Mobile P4). i think they are very nice little machines, decent power, awesome screen/graphics, very good battery life and nice form factor. you could go with a refurbished model to save quite a bit of money. (here's a list of some refurbished c series from clearanceclub starting at around $850 -- again, dont go with the pentium 4 one!). They are 15" though, i dunno if that's too big for you. i personally find this to be the perfect compromise between portability and sufficient screen-workspace. also, fujitsu packs these 15" screens into a very compact form factor.

but since you are considering macs, i'd recommend you go to the apple store (or wherever they have macs) and have them show you a little bit about OS X, see if you like it. Then wait til January 10th for cheaper better Intel ibooks.
