Sager 9880 Hard Drive Upgrade

Hello,
I hope some one can give me some advice about upgrading the hard drive on my Sager 9880 laptop. I got it from an engineering student at Gerogia Tech that needed something a little more portable. He bought it from PC Torque in August this year and it supposedly has a 3 year extended warranty, also purchased from PC Torque. Repeated phone calls and emails to PC Torque about my questions have gotten zero response. I hope members of this forum can answer some my questions and keep me from maybe making a big mistake. I would like to add a 7200 rpm, 100 gb drive to the existing 60 gb x 7200 rpm drive. I am considering a Hitachi travelstar unit. First, does anyone know if I install a new drive myself, will it void the supposed warranty on the machine? The owner's manual raises some questions about this. Second, is this the best choice for an additional hard drive? What is the performance gain of a 7200 vs. 5400 rpm drive and is the performance/price ratio in line? Also, I would like to replace the existing dvd-cdrw optical drive with a dvd burner that has dual layer capability. Any recommendations for this? All replies are greatly aprreciated. By the way, I love this laptop. It is awesome.

For the 2nd HDD - You will need to know if the original drive is an ATA or SATA drive. This is because both the primary and secondary drives must be the same - EITHER ATA or SATA. You can't mix them.

You can install the drive youself. The price/performance "value" assessment is yours to make. You should look at the NEC ND-6500A for an ODD replacement. New egg has them for about $85 (which includes shipping ocsts in the USA). Search for ND-6500 at the Newegg site.

Thanks Gary,
Actually, I was looking at the NEC ND-6650A. Zipzoomfly has it for $89 with free fedex 2nd day air. How does one go about determining whether the HDD is ATA or SATA?
Thanks again for your help.
