5660 upgradeability

Thread Starter
I hope to have my 5660 tomorrow.

From what I have read in the forums thus far, it appears that the 5660's upgrade capabilities are substantial.

Am I correct in this assumption?

I'm sure it's not as upgradeable as a desktop, but I'm curious about what can and cannot be upgraded.

It sounds like some exciting features will be coming out in the very near future and I hope that I can upgrade to some of those should I decide to.

You can upgrade the optical/media drives, Hard drive, and RAM. If they release a new heatsink and fan of the same type with the faster processors, you will be able to swap them also, but not with those parts being kept under warranty. If we get the ball rolling on upgrades, you will be able to upgrade the motherboard and video.

I would love to have a laptop that I could upgrade the motherboard. That's what I like about Sager, they are always pushing ahead and giving us do-it-yourselfers what we need--upgradability I want a pc that I can use for a good year or two, then upgrade to something better without shelling out $$$$ for a new one.

Also just wondering, if they would release a new heat sink, motherboard, etc., would they sell them separately? I'd guess they would since that would be the purpose of upgrading..

Well, whether they sell the processor or not, you could buy it anywhere... It's just a regular old P4, lol. The heatsync is a different story, though. Hopefully they'll make those available for sale if any new design comes out. :-)

I'm waiting for next product cycle then I'm buying! It's going to be a while.

I am curious as to how we will be upgrading the Sager in the first place, seeing as how the Sager probably has everything welded together. Perhaps a section on how it is done?
Just take the mobo out and put in a new one :-) Everything that is welded is done by clevo I'm guessing. Sager's additions are semipermanent. Granted, the graphics card is soldered, but not by Sager :-) lol. Hope that it works out, though....

I'm reposting a post I made in some other thread, but I would like to know the influence of upgrading on the warranties (1 year and the extended warranties). What for example if I paint the case? Will the warranties still be intact, but the restocking fee higher, etc?

Adam, I would like some reseller info on this. (Sorry but I couldn't find answers to this stuff in the forums)

I asked something similar, my case being painted by Color-Ware, but ordered through PCTorque.

Bascially, I asked about 30-day returns, warranty exchanges, etc. with a custom paint color and Adam said something like there is a 20% restocking fee on those as they can only take them apart and sell the pieces (that still fully work, I assume).

It was a bit vague, and is an EXCELLENT question. I would think the warranty would need to be honored by the reseller, since Sager doesn't color the machines. Thankfully, other than 1 dead/stuck pixel, my 8887-x works fine.

I imagine the worst case would be to ship it back and re-use the colored case in a replacement-only (not refund) condition.

PS: Adam, please enlighten us!

It's a case by case basis. Sager doesn't take returns on special orders such as PAL TV tuners and custom paint jobs. So, we charge up to a 20% restocking and would sell the unit as used for 20% off if someone decided to return a special order system.

Regular system orders are under the normal 30 day money back guarantee.

How about if there was a faulty piece? Like the HD failed or the ethernet didn't work? I was wondering about Sager's honoring the WARRANTY with a custom-color (or PAL TV-tuner).

Would it be a case of replace everything in the existing color case and ship back?

Also, since my MP3 player is broken, can I just send that back by itself, or is the whole computer needed (in case it only was broken in my particular laptop)?

For painted notebooks, you get a warranty card with the notebook that has a phone number for Colorware saying to call them for any problems.

Colorware does all the warranty work for their painted notebooks. Since it's just an accessory, you may be able to just get an RMA through Sager, but call Colorware first since they handle the warranty for defective items of notebooks they painted.

Yeah, I got that card, but thought that was only for the PAINT JOB - i.e. chips, fades, what-not. Can you e-mail me Sager's contact info? Or is it in the manual (I'm at work w/o the machine now).

Would love to be able to upgrade my Video card or Processor in the future if they find a way to do this.

A few additonal Questions:

So if I Custom painted my Sager on my own, would the warranty still be intact?

==============================================
EDIT: Just found the online warranty, Guess I need to start praying nothing goes too bad with my Sager now

Here is the part dealing with moddification:

THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT APPLY IF THE PRODUCT HAS BEEN MODIFIED WITHOUT THE WRITTEN PERMISSION OF SAGER OR IF ANY SAGER SERIAL NUMBER HAS BEEN REMOVED OR DEFACED. THE WARRANTY AND REMEDIES SET FORTH ABOVE ARE EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL OTHERS, WHETHER ORAL OR WRITTEN EXPRESS OR IMPLIED SAGER SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ANY AND ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES
==============================================

Also, how hard is it to order OEM parts for the Sager, if they allow this?

Thanks again,

- Indigo
