So...my IDE controller is fried???? That's NOT good, as I'm out of warranty, so replacing a mobo will be big bucks. 18 months after I bought it, my 8790 is halfway crippled.
Well, like I said earlier, thats how my samsung HDD works, too.

I don't think the mobo is fried - maybe the HDD is just picky?

Well, the reason I think the controller is fried is that IDE1 does NOT work with this Samsung drive, while the drive does work on IDE2....that definitely should NOT be happening.

Would it be that XP is set up to recognize that the primary drive (on IDE1) is the original dead drive, so it's not wanting to recognize that another drive on the same controller is the same thing... but nothing had been set to IDE2, so therefore it's "accepting" the drive on that controller?

Just a guess. Altho' that wouldn't account for any non-detection in the BIOS during the boot sequence.

If I had the drive name and nomenclature (Model, etc), I could find out what the default (without jumper) setting of the drive are. Some drive makers set the default to an odd setting that "fits" most of their customer base, but not all.

Does anyone know if this would work in an 8790?

Should be OK.
