Floppy

Hey ibs, does the absence of a 3.5" FDD bother you?
Not very much. But the floppy is very handy from time to time, especially when you need to move small text files quick without bothering to set up a network or worrying about USB ports.

My last laptop didnt have one - or rather it had an external - and there were a couple of times I coudnt get on with my work as I didnt have the ability to transfer files onto my desktop. (Didnt bring the external around).

On the 4080, the FDD option was greyed in the customization page, and I therefore took it as an included option that couldnt be changed. Sort of like the SXGA screen and the 128 MB video card.

Nowadays, though, I have the option of burning the stuff on a CD, so it shouldnt be a big problem. Only an annoyance.

the funny thing, The day that I received my 4080 was the first day in probably a year and a half that I needed a floppy (wifes training software for work) I had to go and by a USB floppy drive because even my desktop doesn't have a 3.5 any more.
hope to never need one again except to go through storage and see if I can find anything good on my old disks.

the card reader is my best friend right now. I have a collection of flash memory from my digi cam and pda. have a $15 usb card reader That i carry around with me if I need to transfer files to another computer, I just plug in the card reader and swap the memory back and forth.

Since im too lazy to write my own review for the 4080, and this one is very good, ill just add some info here. I have a 3.00Ghz/1GB Ram/60GB 7200RPM system, and use Win XP with GUI features turned down to where they were in Win2k. I use Sager's drivers except for the Video card, which has Current (2.5.04) Omegas. My 3Dmark 03 score with all default settings and no OC is 2938. My one issue so far is i cant get Gentoo Linux install CDs to boot properly, they die in the hardware detect, or loose the screen depending on options, but Knoppix will boot, so i assume its only a matter of figuring out options. Also, just since these were things i was wondering when i bought mine, the miniUSB wifi does work with NetStumbler, and the fan runs about half the time under load.

I would recommend getting a memory stick. I picked up a 128MB stick from Newegg.com for less than $40 and keep it on my keyring. It takes the place of 88 floppies and is automatically recognized my Win2K, ME, and XP. This is probably one of the best purchases I've made in years. I've had the thing for over 6 months and, IMO, is very practical and durable.

The memory stick is definitely a better idea than using blank floppies. But I think the issue that some users may face is that some data (driver/old paper?) is on an old floppy and they need to retrieve it. If the lappy is their onlyu computer, then in these cases, a USB floppy is a requirement.

I like not having a floppy on the unit. It's time to get rid of the old crap and put in more practical components like the 6n1 reader.
