Hey guys...I think I will be able to upgrade graphics card down the line!!

Hey everyone...I think MXM is for real. I researched alot today and I found that soon they will be releasing 3 graphics module upgrades based on chassis size.

they are:

MXM 1 - for ultra portable

MXM 2 - for 15.4 thin and lights

MXM 3 - for heavy duty stuff

I have an alienware m5500 on order its a mxm2 notebook that comes currently with the 6600 go 256 mb card. This spring they will be releasing a 7600 card that will fit my chassis.

This is indeed good news!!

I also learned that this is for real too this time not like the "upgradeable" notebook graphics of the past couple years. On Nvidia's site they say that with the ushering in of Pci-E on notebooks they implemented the new MXM standard and it will work great.

Yeah!

Ya MXM has been a hot topic lately that hasn't really been addressed by ODM's or even Nvidia for that matter.

I'd love to see the m5500 capable of using a 7XXX generation video card...in fact, I'd buy one yesterday if they had a date of some sort on availability. The 15.4" lapper is perfect for my busy travel schedule.

I heard "through the grapevine" that the new MXM based cards (IE the 7600 go) will be out in spring 2006.

Don't hold me to that. Its great for me because the 6600go I have coming with my new 5500 will be great for some time to come...getting an upgrade this spring is certainly awesome

If this is confirmed then nice one, but please be aware that these things change over time. I bought the first gen 7700 thinking it would be easy to upgrade the gfx card but it turns out a motherboard swap is also needed making the whole thing financially unfeasable ...

GL tho

Yeah, thats what I was mentioning about the older generation being non-upgradable even though they said it was.

The new MXM model seems to be the one that will actually work. We shall see.

Good post, charivari. You just made my decision tougher (lol). I had pretty well convinced myself to hold out til after the new year to see the reviews you 5500'ers wrote, and then spring for one. Now I'm in the mode of "why not wait a few month's longer" to see what's coming...

Oh well, don't really need a new lappie, just looking for something a bit more mobile.

wow you have an XPS and very powerful one at that.

Will the 5500 be "that" much more portable?

2 lbs and the smaller/thinner form factor would be an advantage. Given I have the desktop, I can lose a bit of performance. I tend to use the XPS 2 mostly on my lap, and I also find it a bit heavy to carry around (that's the only neg so far). The XPS wouldn't go to waste - family members are always willing to take our hand-me-downs.

my 7700 + eveything i use in my backpack 22lbs

so the 5500's 6lbs from my 7700 12-13lbs monster will help me out a bit, + i hate heat n 17' screens...

Yeah I hear you...I got the 5500 because I wanted prtability and power. It seems like a good mix and I'm sure it will eat the latest games no problem.
