I read a post where it works with the A05 Bios but only in low power mode.

yes I can confirm that the 6800 U is recognized by the A05 Bios and that it will only run in low power mode.

one thing I noticed was that Dell apparantly gave me a free upgrade with a 5400 RPM HD instead of the 4200 I ordered it with.

Not really no, Ive seen the b enchmarks and others have posted some here and find their 7200 drives to be slower than desktop drives and some 5400 laptop drives, there are alot of factors involved here, suffice it to say the difference between a 5400 drive and a 7200 drive cannot be called "huge"

You still need the 9cell battery AND the 130watt brick in order to get out of low power mode. That was a determining factor. You can order both from eBay for 80$ if I remember and you'll be up and running in full power mode. Even if running on just the 130watt brick, the system still determines it's power level based on the supporting battery.

Also, DJOHN... you could still make use of that 100gb IDE drive. Look in the forums for the thread about replacing your CD/DVD drive with an IBM hard drive caddy from their newer Thinkpad of a similar design. Then you can have 2 HD's and use the 100gb for your media.

http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/7k100/7k100.htm

If you have a Hitachi HD from Dell (like me, THANK YOU DELL!!!) then goto the above page. Goto Device Manager and under Disk Drives you'll see the model number in the devices name.

Mine is this:
HTS721060G9SA00

Which Hitachi says is this:
60 7200 Serial-ATA

The SA00 means SATA, while AT00 means ATA6 (PATA).

"A05 BIOS revision provides this support in the newer motherboards that were introduced with the m170 change-over." <--- That's what an hour in the middle of the night with someone in the Phillipines gets you.

p.s. I had no idea they spoke english w/o an accent over there. Second time I've talked to someone there that I could actually talk to. And they small talk well too, understand expressional speaking very well.

yea 9300 cant use proper sata drives
I havent done any official testing but it seems like my 9300 installs programs way slower then my old desktop with Athlon 2700 and 7200 WD drive, installing off DVD seems like it takes forever on the 9300. The other unofficial test would be when me and my wife play Civ4 together, the desktop loads the games faster but this could also be due to the desktop having 1GB of ram vs. 512 in the 9300 but UPS has a 1GB stick coming right now so we'll see how that turns out.

I only have a 40 gb of prolly the ATA 5200 RPM, should I pick up a 7200 RPM of like a 60-80 gig. Or do the Pin mod to 2.12? Keep in mind I'm tyring to mod this thing for gaming, and only gaming, lol.

Since you have a 1.6 processor currently I would do the pin mod.

Well I am unlucky enough to get a fujitsu sata drive in mine. That is what came with the 100g option.

Your not unlucky your lucky. Sell your other drive and get a new one.

Just got my new 9300 as well, my HD is a 60gb Toshiba SATA drive. Not sure about whether the 9300 supports true SATA like others have said but the HD says SATA on it and the connector is very different from my "old" 9300.

I plan to open mine up tonight and see if I can find anything out about the sata controller or if they have put in a sata to pata adapter to make this happen.
Let's see some HDTach results coming up between the IDE and SATA versions of the same drive, people. See if there's actually a performance difference or if it's just an adapter.

Awesome let us know the results

Blahman, I am up for that. I have a 100G 5400RPM SATA drive in my new 9300 with a 2.0 and 2G ram. If anyone knows anyone that has a 100G 5400RPM PATA drive that they could get them to bench it would tell us for sure.

I have Hitachi 7200 8MB and Fugitsu 5400 16MB

Don't see much difference tbh.

We are talking about the SATA vs PATA deal though.
