Speaker noise - 5660 - Page 2

Interesting theory... I've run both on and off battery, but to tell the truth, I have long since "tuned-out" the buzz... so I'll check this tonight.

It would make sense, as the AC input is in the area I recall the noise being from (right-rear, under keyboard-ish).

The a/c input is in the LEFT REAR Funny Guy...

Not on the 8887, silly!

And after testing (i.e. moving the windows / sliders / etc. around) I have determined it is the POWER on the 8887 which causes this buzzing.

It buzzes when on AC, but not when I am on battery.

There. Problem discovered (for the 8887, at least).

Aah yes yes yes yes...

Poor 'fixed on 5660' ol me I thought this was a 56XX tech support post...

Aah well I guess I am silly

The 8887 really has the powersupply on the right side?? Weird..

YOu have the CPU there, Power Supply Input there - for sure that is a concentrated source of NOISE...

Btw , I was posting about the 56XX series of laptops. But i guess we just killed 2 birds with one stone on this ~_^. Well anyways, now that we know its coming from the AC adapter. Anyone have any idea of what 2 do ? :- O , I was thinking, how about running the laptop with out the battery being in there to see if the noise goes away. I'd try it right now but im currently recharging the battery since i didnt know i had to cycle the batteries : )

I dont have any noise problems...

Did you install IAA??

Did you mute everything in the volume controls and then unmute only those that were required for you to have audio output??

Mute the mic, aux, phone line, cd player etc.

You should need only two controls active I think...

Volume Control and Wave

the rest can be muted...

I have SPDIF active as well...

Yeah I had tried what you had posted earlier. I muted everything sadly the noise was still there. When i fully recharge my battery to cycle it, il go ahead and try muting everything in the volume panel just to be curious *_*. I was also thinking, what if it could be related to the type of AC adapter were using maybe gsferrari has a different ac adapter. I know you had the noise at first but you never know O_o.

Well i just tried it. And no luck. The Snap-Crackle-Pop noise is still there. : ( Is it bad in any way to have the laptop on without the battery in there?

Driver causing noise

I just bought the USB Sound Blaster MP3+. When I hooked it up to my sager 5620 it worked fine. Then I installed the sound blaster driver. This driver caused choppy noise when watching DVDs im my laptop. Without the driver, it sounds fine.

Anyone know why the sound blaster driver might be causing noise when watching DVD'S.

Since I don't own an 8887 or have one in front of me, I can only make an educated guess. It sounds like one of two things. Improper internal grounding or insufficient electrolytic filter capacitor of the AC Power Pack. It sounds like a 60 Hertz power line buzz. If it is the grounding you could try isolating it by using a three prong to two prong adapter for the wall outlet. If this solves the problem I would call up Sager and ask if they would approve of this as a safe and appropriate solution. I would assume that this would be safe but then again I do not have a schematic for the power pack. I have built dozens of power supplies and the two things mentioned above are usually the culprit if the buzzing is indeed caused by the power supply. The other problems with other noises could be caused by many things and it is hard to comment on those unless I had the notebook in question on my workbench in front of me for analysis. Just my two cents. I hope you don't mind.

Good Luck

KP,

Thanks for the great suggestions; however, as odd as it was, the noise stopped just as sudden as it started. I never USED to have power-surge-like noises, then I did, now I don't. I didn't even monkey with anything! I also haven't noticed it since, so I'm just going to leave it as-is (if it ain't broke...).

I thought I'd post one last time before sending my laptop in for RMA this week for the damned static noise I have coming out of my speakers. I was able to live with it for a while..but lately games are causing even worse noise from the thing It's more or less related to the AC adapter. When my laptop is plugged in video displaying causes high pitched noises out of the speakers (more the top left speaker than the right). Unplugging it causes them to be signifcantly reduced. A 2 pronged converter does not help me either.

I have even tried uninstalling the sound card entirely, but this doesn't make it any better. I have determined it is in fact more the video card than anything else though. Dragging things around my screen causes significant noise, and this NWN toolkit is noisy as hell but only when its maximized. Removing the battery while running on AC power does not fix the problem. So what should I do? Could it just be a poorly grounded AC adapter. Does this look like an internal grounding problem?

Furthermore when I go to RMA it I want to make sure I do it right. Calling PCTorque I was told I had to fill out an RMA form on the website and go then send it in once I had a reply. I always like to do things with a real person on the other end, but if email is the only way then so be it. I am extremely pessimistic about RMAing this thing. Let's just hope it goes ok and I get it back at least somewhat better than I sent it in.

i had this noise when i scrolled through documents and moved windows around. It was very annoying. I email David at sager notebooks about the issue, and he finally said to send it in. So I backed up my important data, packed it up, and off it went with ups. After seven days of shipping, UPS ground from florida to cali, sager fixed things which needed fixing, and the next day i believe they sent it back. Another seven days. Recieved my laptop. I opened it up at the ups parking lot to see what they had done. The paint that was gone under my left wrist was fixed. Then i turned on my system, and of i course i figured as much, the system was gone. No big deal, got home, reloaded the system, and as soon as it was running, NO noise!!!!!!! Thanks SAGER!!!!!

Of couse I did this right before my warranty expired so I'm not sure if you guys with the older 5660 will be able to accomplish this or not. I have a 5670 and bought it just about a year ago.

Sincerely,

Andrew Bond
