And this'll sound kind of newbish, but which firmware might be an issue - the LCD itself? I've really only heard of firmware on stuff like routers and CD-ROMs before.
If I recall correctly (having talked about this very topic with my buddy--a Phoenix BIOS engineer, no less, about four months ago), the video card talks to the LCD in a custom (though more-or-less standard among familes of LCD panels) format that's pretty different than DVI/HDMI, component, VGA, or any other "external" monitor format. It involves row and column addressing and sync pulsing or somesuch. The BIOS on the video card itself needs to understand how to talk the particular LCD's language...

Hmm.. so the problem would be between the video card and LCD. I really hope I'm not making an extremely expensive mistake. I'm almost tempted to cancel the order before it's too late and just deal with getting a WUXGA.

The only consolation I have is I know I currently have an LG panel in here, and I'm almost positive the Toshiba screen is LG as well. They're also the same resolution. However, I don't know if the 6800 is going to be an issue.. hmm. I wonder if they're the same hardware but with different polarizers?

Well, as someone said earlier, a fellow (in the UK, I think) retrofitted a Sony (Sharp) single-CCFL panel into his 9300 (I think it was a 9300).

Then, Waynet tried with a nice high-end 2-CCFL WUXGA (Sony--Sharp mfg?) panel, and had real problems.

As far as I know, the differences between the two panels were:
1) failing panel was 1440 x 900
okay panel was 1920x1200
2) failing panel was two-bulb
passing panel was single-bulb
...
Try it, see if it works! You really have nothing to lose, and maybe much to gain.

EDIT: Dammit I gotta watch my editing...
What I meant was:
1) failing panel was 1920x1200
okay panel was 1440x900

Hm, I suppose you're right. I'm just scared of breaking something - being a college student on workstudy this experiment is costing me about a month's worth of pay (lol)! I guess you can say that's either stupidity or dedication.. your choice

I'd lean toward dedication Can't promise it won't break...but after all my fiddling with the 9300 and the Sony (Sharp) WUXGA, the 9300 worked fine with its orig WXGA+ (ugh) reinstalled. Don't know about the WUXGA.

Should be fine as long as you take your time. Damn I love it when people go the go and tweak the shit out of their lappys . Good luck man, hope it works well

So it's been a week later maybe more, what's the news? I curious to find out if it works because if it does I'll be next in line on this one.

Could I have the ebayID of the seller you were referring to? I'd like to email them and request pics of the screens (front, back, connector and a side-by-side). If it looks like they are within the same dimensions and have a similar plugs (the ribbon is all that matters... those lil plugs can be replaced... the Toshiba plugs come off quite easily too from taking their lappy's apart alot - crappy soldering and plug quality) then I'll prolly give this idea a shot also. I too admit that the Toshiba TruBrite does look better for accurate color reproduction at default color settings in the video drivers. And if it's 1440x900 on a TruBrite I'll be happy. I don't need a 17" laptop that has a higher native than my 2005FPW. =)

Hehe Jax, I have the same monitor. I love that thing (except for my lonely broken green pixel in the top-right corner).

The screen still isn't here yet! I'm going to call them tonight and ask WTF the deal is. The store is in CA and I'm in MA so they probably used very slow shipping or something. I'm getting impatient! If there is any soldering involved I'm not going to go through with it, I can't afford to lose that kind of cash right now. The guy I talked to there did say it would fit, I hope he's right.

lol, one of the reasons i ended up going for a 9300 was because i was on a coupon site checking for 2005fpw coupons and they were removed. i scrolled up a little bit and i saw the 9300 with a higher resolution.

Jenny... I have a stuck black/green pixel in the lower right quad of my screen... but I put some rubbing into it and I never notice it anymore. Not a recommended course of action (I was stupid for trying it... lucky it worked). I enjoy the monitor... makes things very easy to keep on one desktop with the multiple inputs. =)

I commented in the other thread Jenny has about this operation and the panel she ordered is also the same panel that Ctech (where she bought it from) offers for sale as a Dell 9300 WXGA replacement panel. Only difference is that this is a Glossy WXGA instead of the Basic Matte WXGA. It should plug right in and work like a champ for her.

I only live a couple miles from this place. I might just stop by and talk to them. I was interested in doing the same.
