z70v(a) owners: quick question

I've been drooling over this lappy for a while now and have read just about every review out there, and there is pretty much one thing that i dont like about the design, or at least think i wont like: the lip or overhang of the bottom chassis. Do you feel that it gets annoying or makes handling it awkward or just simply takes away from the style? I know i'm being super picky, but hey, if i'm gonna drop $1700 i deserve to be! Thank you for your opinions

Doesn't bother me one bit.

no problems here...

What overhang are you talking about? Isn't the bottom chassis flush against the top chassis?
Not a problem at all.. you'll barely notice it.

the size of the top of the Z70V is not the same as the actual footprint...the top of the base overhangs the bottom of the base...you can kinda see it here...

awesome, thanks guys, i appreciate it!

OH that's what he meant...heh.

When I had my M6Ne, it didn't bother me at all...in fact, it made the notebook much easier to lift up and move.

I agree, the lip help ease the lifting a lot. And I do a lot of lifting. I'd rather have it than not. Having it flushed would make it harder to lift off the table. It also gives the illusion of it being much thinner than it really is.

When I lift up my Z70V, I normally pry upwards a bit on the "lip" to get some space between the table and the tilted laptop. Then I get my all my fingers/palm to the actual bottom of the laptop before doing the final lifting.

I tend to be more "careful" when lifting up on the lip because I don't think anybody should be putting too much torque around there. I would imagine in the VERY long run, if you put a lot of force on that overhang, the structure will eventually weaken significantly... but again, that's in the very long run.

Generally speaking, I think this overhang does cause me to be concerned, but the actual chance for damage is close to nil.

When carrying the bare laptop in one hand, flush to the side of my body, I would NOT have the overhanging edge pointed downwards in my palm. The only comfortable and relatively safer way would be to carry with the back edge (where all the ports are) downwards in my palm.

This is just my picky opinion on how the overhang changes your day-to-day handling with the laptop, but please don't think this should change your purchasing decision. I don't think this is a big deal at all, even though I thought it would be when I first bought my Z70V.

i prefer the overhang, makes it look more sophisitcated and different from all the other boxes out there
post #12 of 17
The overhang is awesome because it makes it look thinner than it really is.

My right #@^ overhangs my left one but it make it easy for lifting what in between. Is something wrong???
The overhang isn't a problem. Just buy one and be happy!
J.C. you are in the wrong place for people to be happy. Most people here are anal (picky in case this term escaped you before) or have problems wit their lappies. If it wasnt for picky people i would still be parking cars and working a dead end computer admin sidekick job out on the island. I down to picky people. Thank you for my job and my sleep disorder.

Actually I love the "overhang" because it gives an illusion that the laptop appears to be thinner than it seems. Compare the non overhang with any Dell and see what I mean.

The lip overhang is fine. You don't notice it and when you carry it it gives you a better sense of grip. Also its nice for the DVD drive cause you accidently press the button since its underneath the lip.
