Ram upgrading

I'm running on a gig of ram right now and have a free slot. I want to add another gig of ram.
Is it a big difference?

Not unless you're playing advanced games like BF2 or FEAR, or other highly graphics-intensive programs.

What type of computer to you have?

thinkpad T42p.
I dont really have time to play games but I use alot programs like of Matlab, photoshop, visual C++, etc.
