I don't know of any software, but there are a coupe things I do if I feel a laptop is overheating. First of all, spray all vents with compressed air, because dust in a fan will really kill your cooling performance. If that doesn't help it might be a good idea to get one of the notebook cooling pads, and make sure she isn't using it on any surfaces that would block the intake.

Yeah.. we need to do something because its running at 60C at idle.. which I believe is too hot..

If its running that hot, the fan is probably running at full speed anyways. I strongly suggest getting some compressed air and cleaning the laptop out with it. I have seen many laptops with overheating issues cured by dusting.

The fan should cycle on and off as needed, usually stays off for quite a while.

The fans on both my ThinkPad and Presario stay off for a long time but never has anything locked up because of the heat.

To take software out of the equation, boot into and stay in bios, see if the same issue occurs.

The cooling fan is mimiscle to say the least so just a little dust in the air outlet will stall any airflow. Also, the foot pads under the NB might be worn or missing, that starves the fan.

Yeah, well I believe it may be a combo of things... her hard drive is about 40C idle and her cpu is around 58-60 idle. Also when surfing the net she only has about 20-40 megs of physical mem free... after I found out that her ram was so low.. I am begining to think its a shortage of ram..

My Presario V2000 recently started shutting down at random times. I figured it was the fan and it needed to be clean. Well, I was right, but when I went to disconnect the fan wire from the system board the little white clip that was hooked to the system board came off with the wire and now it is disconnected with no way to reconnect it to the system board.

The fan was really dirty and I cleaned it but I have no clue if the fan is completely shot or if it works now since I cannot reconnect it to the system board.

I either need to test the fan and see if it words and if it doesn't get a new one and figure out a way to connect it to the system board again OR I need to find an economic use for the notebook since I cannot use it without the fan because the system automatically shuts down when it passes a certain temperature.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would suggest you to take the board to an electronic shop and ask if someone can somehow savage the connector. If not another board might be in order.

cheers ...

Do you hear/feel the fan spin when you first power on the system? If you do not, then the fan died and needs to be replaced which is easy enough to do yourself. A new fan on eBay is probably cheap.

If the fan is not working, I would stop using the system completely before something else begins to fail like the hard drive for example...
