upgrade celeron to centrino not possible

Hi !
I try to upgrade my new Gateway laptop from a 1.4GHz Celeron M to a Pentium M 1.6 GHZ FSB533.

The new 1.6GHz "Centrino" is only recognized as 1.2 GHz and I can't change any seeting within the Gateway Bios.

The old Centrino is 16x100. How should be the clock for the 1.6GHz? 12x133?

How can I fix that? Thanks
Phyl

12 x 100 Mhz = 1.2 Ghz. 12 x 133 Mhz = 1.6 Ghz. You need to change the multiplier. My notebook has a little switch by the CPU that can adjust which multiplier it runs at. If yours has the same thing, you can crank it back up to a 1.6. If not, I think you're stuck with a 1.2.

hmm ... there is no switch. I guess Gateway restricted that bios to 100MHz FSB. Surely I could flash the Bios, but I don't want to ruin the warranty.

Thanks a lot

Unless your laptop is based on the 915 chipset, you're stuck at 100 Mhz bus speed. No bios update will solve that. Odds are, you have the 855 chipset - only 100 Mhz bus speed.

You bought the wrong CPU.
